I disagree. If we don't have a clear format winner (and soon) people aren't going to buy HD-DVD/Bluray. If there's no significant demand for either one, prices will never significantly drop.
I think Sony and the rest of these asshats need to focus on a unified format. It really is for their own best interest and bottom line.
No one really cares which one is better or which one they get. I certainly don't give a sh*it. I just want one format. I'm tired of watching DVD's on my HDTV. They look like crap. Just give me 1080i!!!!!!!!!!
Think about it- when do you plan to buy a High Def. DVD player? When there's one format, right?
kinda' like sony's super cd audio format that went no where... The best buy by me has plenty of cd's in that format... except they don't have a single player for sale
I'll wait until, yes there's a winner, but more importantly when the
price is right. My point was just that with 2 competing prices should come
down faster than if there was just 1. That was my only but.
Hey, with 18 month old and a 4.5 year old girls my HDTV is dominated by
f*cking Strawberry Shortcake and Noggin anyways!
Yeah, I will wait also, no point wasting that kinda cash. But I really hope bluray comes out on top. Just think....50 gig of storage on a disc 8O . Gotta be great!
Well, DVD has lasted a while, atleast long enough to buy a burner and a few players.
What I'm really looking forward to is flash disk hard drives, computers will be blazing fast. They already have made 32 gb flash hard drives, but again, it takes a good chunk of cash.
A format war is a standard plot to rob early adaptors of more cash. It's a neat trick too. I bet the big vendors draw straws each time there's another opportunity for a format war, and have a good laugh over it afterwards.
Just the fact that you contemplate waiting till a standard is determined already disqualifies you as a serious early adaptor Well, ok you can contemplate it, just tell us though when you've fallen for it anyways.
I don't think that the majority of early adoptors are stupid enough to buy one technology over the other. Who the hell wants a bluray & HD-DVD copy of Ice Age?
The movie studios have drawn lines over HD DVD releases. Half of them (mainly Sony subsidiaries) are going to be on bluray and the other half on HD-DVD. Both formats have movies slated for release that I really want in HD.
But I'm not stupid enough to go out and buy a bluray and HD-DVD player. I don't think the majority of early adoptors are either. But I could be wrong...
While you wait its easy enough to fork over $79.99 on a 1080i upconvert dvd player to watch your standard dvd's in better quality than just progressive scan. Provided you have an HD tv that is...
Yeah I've seen those. They do look good... better than 720p. I saw one on display at sears and I thought I was looking at a bluray player or something (it wasn't of course).
But it's still not quite the same quality as a 1080i broadcast.
I'll stick to ABC and CBS HD broadcasts of movies for now. Terminator 3 looked awesome in 1080i. Finding Nemo too.
There is some big lawsuit going on about BluRay and how it's being misused or given out to be a standard..
I don't expect it to last.. but I figure a blue laser will come into the market of DVDs and overtake the red laser within the next 4-7 years.. when everything goes digital I'd guess.
My buddy has on eo fthose DVD players. While some DVD's look better,
some actually look worse on it.
Wanna know a dirty little secret?
All that security stuff is going to mess with EVERYONE who has an HDTV, the security tags in DVDs sometimes think you are copiing the DVD so they lower the quality of an upconvert player from 1080i down to 480i ot even lower in some cases.
Figure out which upconvert player he has and what DVDs look worse and poke around abd my guess that he is using Component cables or something that isn't HDCP certified.
SSSSSShhhhhh, dont tell anyone.......
i sell upconvert players and HDTV's everyday, and i see shit like this EVERYDAY.

It's a Samsung, don't know the model no. He uses the DVI connector.
Thanks for the info.

DVI isn't HDCP.....its a dirty little secret.....none of the companies are telling people that HDMI is the ONLY way to watch HDCP mataerial.
DVI is his problem....if he switches to HDMI ALL movies will look better.
Yeah....its something thats WAY messed up....but its out there.
I think its hillarious that there are no rules, standards or even guidlines for products that are to hit the market the 31st of March for HD-DVD and Aug for BlueRay.
You would be amazed how messed up things are.....only ONE 1080p TV today will be able to display 1080p from networks when that comes around. Because none of the others have the HDCP decoder built in. So the other 25-50 1080p tvs are useless for 1080p.
There is so much about HD, HDtv's, HD media, and HD setups that average and even above average people dont know its SCARY.
hell i know some, but i am still kinda lost....and i know more then 99% of people

What I do know and pisses me off to no end are these facts
1: When I see golf listed on C.B.S. & turn to the C.B.S HD channel half the time I get stuck with crappy 480 bordered to chit format on my 1080i 16:9 screen .....Anger...
2: The Comcastic! cable service I have still only has about 10 HD chanels half of which subscribe to rule #1 above.
3: I buy wide screen movies hopeing some day someone will actually release one that is in actual 16:9 format not still bordered letter box chit.
4: I've yet to see a wide screen tv that when you use the zoom feature on letter box movies that would simply fill the screen from top to bottom without cutting everyones head off.
5: The quality of HD broadcasts varies dramaticly. Watch a football game on Fox Hd and you can read jerseys on fans 30 rows back but on CBS Hd your lucky to be able to discern what gender people are in the 1st row

Yes, not everything is HD 24/7....and sometimes they merely upconvert the signal and it looks like poo.

Comcastr actually has more HD channels then anthing else, and its moe then 10. they are upto like 28 i think.....but thats on the channels side. IF they could get everythign in HD they would broadcast it in HD. Blame the channels NOT the TV's or Comcast for this one.

Blame Speilburg....the directors make movies in like 15 formats, so the tv doesn't know. newer ones you can actually tell it what format the movie is in so you can zoom properly...but its still a pain. Deal with the black bars and have everythign in normal aspect ratio.

THis is because Fox is recording in 1080i and down converts to 720P.....giving you a 1sec lag but making the images CRAZY SMOOTH. CBS however records it in 720p native and you get pixelation problems.
Yes from channel to channel it varies what quality of HD you will get....
But none of these have to do with the actual TV's.
People make so many snap judgements about stuff and then forget that there are about 50 companies and about 2,500 people who make content.....they can't all agree on how to do it.
Unfortunatly this is just how it is for a while.....If HD tv's were in movie formats your TV shows would look stupid.....so its a compirmise of all of them. the only true 16:9 stuff is HD broadcasts.
I have 2 an akai 42 " 16;9 rear projection in the living room & a samsung 30" 16:9 crt in the bedroom.... I love the crt but it's a fookin beast... Like 22" deep or some chit...
