I desperately need to overclock my Cyrix M2 PR333 for my new broadband
connection.

I have PC133 memory and a mobo capable of all the bus/clock multiplier
settings. The cooler is ok, but nothing special.

Is the M2 any good for overclocking? What settings are ok?

The mobo has onboard graphics, sound + network. Will upping the bus speed
fry these?

HELP, PLEASE!!!!!

Cyrixes already got quite hot... What're you doing on your PC that needs a
small increase of speed of your processor?

I need a small increase as the actual proc speed is 250MHz. Winmx needs a
266MHz min for a primary connection. Also my broadband min spec states
233MHz which means I only just get away with it.

Anything else I can do to increase speed of my PC? (software based, I have
all hardware upgrades in place already.....)

Neither you nor any application will notice the difference of a clock speed
of 250 MHz compared to 266 MHz.

Generally the 'minimum' requirements stated for an application are exactly
that; the application will function 'minimally'. Exactly what actual
problems are you experiencing? What uses do you make of the Internet? What
browser/email/newsreader programs do you use? What do you use for virus
protection and for firewall functions (and protection from spyware and
adware)? All of these make a demand on processor power, over and above the
power necessary for decoding, interpretation, and presentation.

You should be able to pick up a used system for not much more than the
charge for a few months of broadband fees (at least in the USA; ADSL
broadband runs about $40 - $50 US per month and a used Pentium III desktop
on ebay can be had from $125 US and up.) If you want to use your broadband
connection for content like streaming media then your only choice is to
replace your cyrix because of the processor power needed for decoding and
presentation.

For communication,
replace "at" with the 'at sign'
replace "mindjump" with "mindspring."
replace "dot" with "."

I know this myself, but the prog won't actually allow me to make a primary
connection with a proc speed of less than 266mhz.

I'm looking into an AMD K6-2 500MHz, which should set me back about 10GBP
(about $15). This should give me a reasonable increase in speed on the
tight budget which I am currently on...............

I'd think so too... Be sure though your mainboard supports that proc.

Just replace the chip with a second hand K6-2. I know it's
not what you want to hear, but you should have no problem
finding one that'll overclock for fun and will cost less than a
pizza.

Cyrix and K6's are interchangeable.

And it'll still overclock. I love the old K6's.

you can overclock it, i had a 233 overclocked to 250 years ago and it
survived. you have to configure it also with a program from IBM that manages
the mttr registers.... That program is really an improvement. I do not know
where to find it now as i sold the system.
