Hello all,

At work on a computer I am running XP pro. It receives an internet
connection through regular wired internet. I have used an SMC 2862 wireless
USB adapter set on ad hoc mode with the ICS service providing it with
internet so that I can use a laptop wirelessly in the same room. I am using
the latest drivers and firmware from SMC.

The initial installation and setup work fine. Removal of the USB adapter
while this computer is live is also no problem. However, any time I reinsert
the USB adapter into the desktop computer, the desktop 'seizes'. The taskbar
listing shows a system process running at 100% of CPU resources which doesn't
stop until a reboot. This also happens if the USB adapter is not even
removed but merely if a setting is changed on it requiring a momentary
disable and reenable of the network adapter.

I always use the same USB jack. I have tried disabling ICS for the desktop
prior to removal of the USB adapter. I have tried disabling the USB adapter
prior to removal. None of these manoevres have been effective.

I was really hoping that this would be a plug and play solution.

Thanks for any advice.

Can you check which process is chewing up CPU when you re-inserting the USB
wireless adapter? To do so, move mouse to task bar, right click and choose
task manager, then choose "Process" tab, and click CPU column two times so
that highest CPU number displays first.

Thanks
Hui
