Hi, I'm having problem with running games with my arcadeVGA card that
are over 400X something res. First I tried to load the game and the
resolution was too big for the screen. Then I tried using Gavin Bensons
utility which i downloaded at ultimarc, but now the game it too small
for the screen! Gavin Bensons utility created <game>.ini files for all
my mame games and inside the file it doesn't specify the resolution
400X (something i can't remember) explicitly in it.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

Sounds like the problem is most likely with vertical games, I'd guess.

The utility on Ultimarc's site doesn't always pick the best resolution
for a game. I'd recommend using the MAME Resolution Utility by the
author of MAMEWAH instead:

http://mamewah.mameworld.net/downloads.htm

It's much easier to fine-tune and test each game resolution using this
utility, and then you can save out all the .ini files once you've gotten
resolution settings you like.

For some more details and utilities, check out the RetoBlast article on

Can you provide a little more info on the problem you are having?

The games that I found most often had incorrect settings were vertical
games - either the resolution chosen was too high, or there were
problems with the aspect ratio.

Most of those problems seem to be because there wasn't a perfect match
for the vertical resolution of the game, but quite often you can choose
a "doubled" vertical resolution and achieve an 'arcade' perfect look.

Just as a hypotheical example, if a game wanted a 220 vertical, but one
wasn't available, quite often the utility defaulted to 640x480. However,
a 440 vertical resolution (if available) would produce a much better
picture.
