The sound on my IPAQ is dead. I've checked the settings, nothing wrong. I
hesitate to do a hard reset (would that help anyway?). Could the problem be
anything else than a hardware failure

Thanks

A) what's a 1540
B) is the sound completely gone or is it there with headphones and not via
the speaker. If that's the case, insert an remove the headphone jack a
number of times (10 seems to be the popular #). Sometimes the mechanical
mechanism that shuts of the speaker gets stuck and you can often un-stick
it.
C) Could be other than hardware. If you call in for service or an RMA, they
are going to have you hard reset it during isolation anyway. Might as well
give it a shot.

Do a backup before the hard reset. If your problem is fixed, just rebuild
your iPaq from scratch, because restoring would likely restore the problem.
You can always try a restore though, another hard reset only takes a few
seconds.(It's the rebuild that takes the time ;) )
