I run a XP professional at home. Recently it started booting up
itself when we try to connect USB devices, or while surfing.. Is
there any better verison i could upgrade to.
The tech guy said memory could be corrupt. Any suggestions?? We right
now have 512 MB RAM (128MB shared with VGA) and it sits on a 2.8 GHZ
Intel HT processor.

Actually, if you go into the bios/ power settings; I think you'll find
you have your computer set to wake up on a USB event. If you turn
this setting to off, it should fix you right up.

dannysdailys is right (USB Wakeup). Of all the years I've worked on
computers, the number of times a computer goes from simple fix to complete
reformat and reinstall is after talking to a "Tech" Just the thought of a
client calling a tech makes me sweat, especially the CompUSA, Best Buy,
Fry's, Circuit City techs....

Agreed. Google is the best tech you'll ever find.
