Gidday,, after some time and testing (aka_throwing bits out)
I have arrived at a definite modem driver config problem
with this machine. I got to this point in time with guidance
from the previous thread, I am hoping to impinge on the
knowledge base yet again and ask... please check this
connect log to offer an explanation as to _ why_ I may be
getting :
TSP(000): Linevent: Line_Close
?
I
Smartlink 56K drivers install the modem and according to
"query modem" all is working fine. Dialout immediately gives
"error 628 - the remote computer terminated blah blah"
[ about 1.5 secs into connect script].
COM1 or COM2 connected makes no difference (visible).
Deinstalling all the driver files and registry entrys and
then reinstalling the SML 56 driver has not worked so far as
a complete fix. The modem install is fine but the modem
does not connect internally, it seems.
Maybe I need to rip out the unimodem files listed in the
log?
The query shows the Country flag set
The connect log says "no country",, is there a clue here?
And I AM wondering why the log identifies the modem as a
5630 and not the 5600 which Clevo supplies drivers for.

Under Win98SE, the modem works fine. With XPro (standard
write)...sigh, its a no show !

Help ! ;- ))

I have taken the liberty of reposting your query to comp.dcom.modems
which is probably a better forum for this type of question.

Having said that, I don't know much about your modem's chipset, but I
managed to find the following info. It seems that yours is an AMR
(Audio Modem Riser) softmodem.

======================================================
Product descriptions (SmartPCI, SmartRiser, SmartUSB):
http://www.smlink.com/main/index1.php?ln=en&main_id=15

Smart Link has two main product types:

Internal modem - V.90/92 modems in a form factor of: PCI, Mini PCI,
AMR, CNR and MDC

External modem - V.90/92 modems in a form factor of: USB
======================================================

The AT command set is here:
http://www.smlink.com/main/down/ATCommands.pdf

Here are the downloads, including Windows/Linux drivers:
http://www.smlink.com/main/index1.php?ln=en&main_id=20

There appears to be one XP driver archive for all modem types:

File Name: SLA56-V3.60.03-MV-WIN2K-XP.exe
Driver Version: 3.60.03
Driver Date: November 17, 2003
Driver Size: 3.2 MB

.... and a Win98 driver:

File Name: SLA56-V3.60.03-MV-WIN98.exe
Driver Version: 3.60.03
Driver Date: November 17, 2003
Driver Size: 3.2 MB

Some Smartlink info can be found here:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/smartlink.asp

Here is some chipset info I found at a Linux site:

Si3012-BS Phone Line Interface N. A./JPN 16-pin SOIC
Si3012-KS Phone Line Interface N. A./JPN 16-pin SOIC
Si3014-BS Phone Line Interface International 16-pin SOIC
Si3014-KS Phone Line Interface International 16-pin SOIC
Si3024-BS AC97 Interface 16-pin SOIC
Si3024-KS AC97 Interface 16-pin SOIC
HAMR5603 AC97 Interface 16-pin SOIC

SmartPCI56-INT = Si3012 + HAMR5603 + SL1500
SmartPCI56-INT = Si3014 + HAMR5603 + SL1500
=========================================================

Your modem probably has the Si301x phone line interface and the
HAMR5603 AC97 interface. You may want to check that, if at all
possible, just to ensure that the driver is detecting it correctly.

Your modemlog suggests that Dial-Up Networking aborts when it cannot
set or determine the modem's country code. Clearly the modem is set up
for Australia (probably via a Control Panel applet), so if you could
find a way to prevent DUN from fiddling with this parameter, then the
call may proceed normally. Unfortunately, as yours is the first
modemlog I've seen where country codes are set in this way, I have no
idea how to do this.

What is confusing is the part where DUN is "Sending [the] Country
Select Command". The command, AT+GCI?, queries the country code rather
than setting it. The correct command for setting the code to
"Australia" is AT+GCI=09. In any case, the modem has attempted to
respond with "<cr><lf>+GCI=09", but DUN has not detected the entire
string.

If DUN is expecting a "<cr><lf>OK" response at this point, then
perhaps you could trick it into interpreting the "<cr><lf>+" as an OK.
You could do this by adding the "<cr><lf>+" string to the Responses
section of your registry or your INF file (mdmhamrw.inf), as follows:

HKR,Responses,"<cr><lf>+",1, 00, 00, 00,00,00,00, 0,0,0,0
