Radeon TV-out turns on at boot, nothing on monitor until W..

I have a weird problem that's been bugging me. I finally decided to seek a
higher power ;-)

I run a Win XP/Linux system with a Radeon 9600 Pro on an ASUS A7V266-E with
an Athlon XP 1800+. If I have the (S-video) TV-out plugged into a TV when
I boot the machine, nothing after the CMOS display is shown on the computer
monitor until I get into Windows XP or X loads in Linux. On the TV is a
flickering display of the bootup sequence and the computer monitor makes a
high-pitched sqweel but is completely black. If I leave the TV-out
*DIS*connected, then I see the whole bootup sequence on the computer
monitor just fine. The only solution I've found is to unplug the TV-out
EVERY time I reboot which is annoying. Does anyone know a way around this?

I have the same problem if I swap in a Radeon 7000.

I'm pretty sure it's not a Windows/Linux config problem because this even
affects the LILO bootloader.

Thanks,
Mitchua

Does your TV have a remote? Mine is set to run on the monitor, and I
switch to TV display using the TV remote. (TV/VIDEO button) On boot, my
start sequence also flickers and rolls. (I don't get noise or black screen)
Not sure how your setup works, but I would guess your TV is set to the
primary display. I would try setting the monitor as primary and switching
to TV display using the remote, or the video card properties display.

Would the settings in the O/S really affect the bootup? Everything works
fine once it's booted in an X environment.

To make it even more crazy, the TV is the primary monitor in Linux but it's
the 2ndary monitor in Windows...and I have the problem with both of them.

Thanks for the reply,

I believe the 2nd output is treated as a PCI device. Check the BIOS setup
and see if AGP or PCI is set as the default video device.

Good idea! I tried changing my "VGA BIOS" from PCI to AGP. Unfortunatly,
that didn't seem to change anything :-( Is that the setting you were
talking about?

My other reply appears to have gotten lost, so I apologize if this is a
duplicate.

I believe that the ATI card treats the 2nd output as a PCI device. You
probably have an option in the BIOS to set a default video device, AGP or
PCI. If it's not on AGP, try changing it to AGP and see if that helps.

I tried responding a couple of days ago, but my ISP has had a problem with
this newsgroup.

I believe that the 2nd output on the Radeon card is treated as a PCI device.
Your motherboards BIOS probably has an option to set AGP or PCI as the
default video device. Most, not all, motherboards I've seen default this to
PCI. Try changing it to AGP and see if that solves the problem.

Wayne, your posts have been showing up, so clearly your ISP is getting the
posts out.

Why is it that you believe the 2nd output is treated as a PCI device?
This is not a "2nd" output per se, it's the same, 1st output but
redirected to the monitor. Without the driver loaded the card cannot
enable the 2nd output IIRC. Seems most likley this problem is one of the
monitor not supporting the refresh rate the card (changes to) when it
senses TV-Out connected. In other words we could blame the cards for not
supporting muliple refresh rate(s) but most if not all cards do that, so
the monitor becomes suspicious as the incompatible device.
