OK, here's a run-down of the symptoms, some of which might be red
herrings. I'll be very grateful if anyone can suggest what might be
the matter, or at least suggest whether it's a hardware or software
problem. My computer runs Windows XP, and the subject says which
printer I have.

(1) Suppose I begin with the printer and its software not installed,
but both printer and computer switched on. Dell's instructions are
that I should plug the printer in, then cancel the automatic Windows
installation thing that appears (which would normally begin with the
installation of a 'generic USB Hub'), then run the installation
software from the CD-ROM provided. However, when I do this, then
firstly, after cancelling, I get a message from Windows telling me
that there's a problem with my new hardware. Secondly, when I try to
install the software from the CD, it tells me that it can't detect the
printer at all. I've tried installing the generic USB hub, then
cancelling subsequent installations, then running Dell's installation
program, but I get exactly the same results.

(2) If, on the other hand, I let the automatic Windows installation
run its course, then it eventually installs the A920 for me, without
producing any error messages. However, when I try to print in colour,
I get a systematic glitch whereby (a) what should be solid green is
drawn as alternating green and yellow stripes (b) what should be solid
blue is drawn as alternating blue and pink stripes (c) red is drawn
correctly. I've tried (by going to properties->color management)
switching the so called 'color profiles', but that seems to have
absolutely no effect. Note also that the cartridges are brand new, so
there's no question of there being enough ink.

This sounds like an issue with the cyan portion of the cartridge. You might
try reseating the cartridge. If there is a nozzle self-test available try
printing this. I suspect your yellow and magenta portions are OK but you have
an interconnect issue with the cyan.

As for the installation issues you may need to call support, as the unit is
certainly still in warranty.
