I've been playing around with the Save State feature and
would really like to use it to help the games load faster,
bypassing all of the "self-test" stuff the games do, etc.
However, it seems some games simply don't like this and
will crash. I did some testing and games like Robotron,
Galaga, Berzerk, etc. crash (starting MAME with the save
state or loading the save state when the game is already
loaded - doesn't matter), but other games like Pac-Man,
Rygar, etc. work fine.

Anyone messed around with this and have any fixes, ideas,
etc. I'm testing with MAME32, but plan to use the true
DOS version (.7x).

Waiting for the game to start via it's usual POST is fun, and all part
of the anticipation of MAME game playing. The save state function in
MAME is flaky IIRC so not all games will work anyways. Your best bet if
you want a faster start up is to unthrottle the speed on MAME until the
title screen comes up then turn the throttle off. There is no batch
file or patch that I have heard of that will automatically do this, but
because I havent heard of it, doesnt mean it doesnt exist...

IIRC they may have been a front end with this option...

The state saving is really, really designed for dev use and not for
normal users. It is not, and will not ever be reliable for you,
sorry.

i find it works when i load a game in the same state i saved it

like if i am in the middle of playin the game and save i can load a
save state but if it is on a demo screen or title screen or selection
screen, it wont load the state

for example cruisn usa i save the game rigt after the flag is waved
every level if i try to load a savestate during car selection or the
title screen it doesnt work

but if i start a race after the flag drops i can load the state and it
will work even if it is a different level (track) with a different car
