The few ways to get Windows 7 free is if your computer was purchased before a date, you can look it up on Google and in which case you need to contact the PC manufacturer. Another way is being in the MSDN, (development subscription). Yet another way is if your college or university is under an academic program you may be able to get Windows 7 for about $30. There is also a technet subscription, but that runs around $300~a year..
Judging however since you know know about any of these, your probably not qualified for any of this.
Good luck with that one, there isn't a such thing as a legit free anything. If its free from microsoft, its called piracy. haha. Unless of course you just bought the machine from a vendor, and they said free upgrade to windows 7, only 9.95 for shipping (see still not free)
