RAM can be a little finicky, they should be all the same speed and have the same timings for them to work best together. When RAM is packaged at the factory, the sticks are tested to work together (so a pack of 4 sticks is tested together before leaving the factory, to make sure they do work fine together). Thus, it is best to buy all the RAM in one swoop. Sounds like you have at least one bad stick, or if you haven't had RAM in the other slots before, a bad slot or two. I would test pairs of the sticks in the 2 banks you know are good, and see if you run into issues with any set of 2, that would likely tell you whether your RAM is bad or one of your DIMM slots.
