The CD r/w no longer shows up in W2K system.
I have removed it via device manager and also physically
removed it. I put it in another machine where it worked
perfectly. When I reinstall it in w2k system, the drive
immediately shows up in device manager and the driver
appears to be ok.

What else can I check??
Thanks

Also, the drive does not show up in BIOS. Although I have no idea how
the data cable could have gone bad (doubt it seriously), I am going to
replace
it and change the jumper from select to master on second connector.
But I have no hope that will change things.

I changed out the ribbon cable with known good one and changed jumper from
cs to master. It didn't work.

mmmm don't bother with a reply - I see that you have posted this question in
another group and as you are getting help there I can't see a point in
replicating the procedure here.

alt.comp.hardware.pc-homebuilt - for those that are interested.
