Professor Pianka said the Earth as we know it will not survive without drastic measures. Then, and without presenting any data to justify this number, he asserted that the only feasible solution to saving the Earth is to reduce the population to 10 percent of the present number.

---

Immediately almost every scientist, professor and college student present stood to their feet and vigorously applauded the man who had enthusiastically endorsed the elimination of 90 percent of the human population. Some even cheered.

Maybe we should start by asking for volunteer suicides. Think Pianka would step up to the plate?

I wouldn't mind [killing myself], but only if 90% of people in the world are doing it with me as well.

Go ahead. We'll be right behind you. I promise.

Interesting read, thanks for the link.

Also read this article by Shawn Carlson, which is a follow up on the article by Mr Mims.

When you've read all that, I think Carlson sums it up nicely. I hope many people will take the trouble of reading her article.

Btw, this is a nice opportunity to watch that movie "12 Monkeys" again because that storu is entirely revolving around this idea (with the addition of closed loop time travel, which you can ignore if you really dislike that kind of thing).

Good article.

I have never seen 12 Monkeys, but I will check it out.

Gaia theorists have advocated similar theories regarding population levels but I've never seen a call for a reduction of 90% or so. However, Gaia theory in general is entirely plausible to me; in fact, its a workable ethos for me.

Frankly, the figure of 90% is entirely unrealistic and unworkable. Unfortunately, given that human life is worshipped as being "sacred" and the concept of humanity "inviolate", our species will continue to boom by the hundreds of millions. I truly believe that by the end of this century, Mother Earth, will be close to unliveable for most species, including ours except for those who own the small pockets of land left that are viable for existence. I base my assumptions not on fractious green-party doom and gloom, but on myriad rational publications that now suggests we're on a one-way ticket to self-destruction. Global warming is just the beginning.

Reply to BomberBill

First read the articles, Bill.

This is not about Gaia, it is about the danger of someone deciding to give Gaia a "helping" hand, instead of recognizing that we are part of Gaia, ourselves. We are coming to a point in your development where a single person can create serious havok to billions (at least that is the assumption if such a person can get access to a deadly pathogen).

Reply to BigMac

Mac, I gave the atricle a read before I posted. I just felt it was a solid opportunity to raise the notion of Gaia theory.

I say anyone who still writes a check for groceries at Wal-Mart should be eliminated.

Those people really piss me off.

Here's that jackass's email address:

pianka@mail.utexas.edu

I sent him an email with the following sentence:

"I say you be one of the 90% eliminated"

Reply to mpjesse

90% is a little drastic, let's just make a start with the ginners and see how it goes.

Reply to Tom_Smart

Well, it appears that I may have been duped by a creationist spin doctor (a.k.a. Forrest Mims). If I had known that Mims was a creationist, I would not have taken that article at face value. Creationists are masters of propaganda.

Seems that noone else has the same account of Pianka's speech that Mims has.

Check out Wikipedia's entry for Pianka.

I apologize for hyping this story, and that asshat Mims.

I read several parts of his website. The guys still seems like a pompous ass... His "obituary" is quite ammusing. So is his "ten commandments."

Reply to mpjesse

Pompous ass, maybe.

Maniac calling for the extermination of 5 billion people, I don't think so.

Heard it on the news from the wife. The guy is not right and he is not wrong with what he wanted to say, we have not had a World War in 55 some years where we killed off thousands of soldiers and civilians every day for 5 years. Don't forget the planet culling we had in the Great war WWI that was another great victory for the elite belonging to the nepotism group.

Fact is if we halved the current World population we would still run out of natural resources in the next 20 or perhaps 5 short years. Not everyone can own a Honda for example and everything else we own in our homes and cloth our selves with.

Hell I saw a clip on the Telly showing them making buttons for clothing and they make 50 buttons a second just to keep up with supply and demand.

Read about "six sigma and the Lean Process" and you will find out it takes 5 years for a coke can to make it from the mines to the paint booth and to your table.

Remember I am 5% book smart and 95% real smart so what I say is the truth.

Hey everybody! Sod is back.

Only you Sod could post that without fear of a lambasting.

90% is insane. 80, maybe 85%, but 90? C'mon.

]-[ello Bill good Sod that you are :)

Well the Doctor made me do it.

I could not pass it up the guy said openly what every other human on earth already knows but never talks about.

I cant help but feel that the Good Doctor pulled the Old School CLEM Job of Hey everybody look at the obvious I can see it and smell it and I think I made it but you all must have missed it because I said it first.

We could start culling someplace close to his home address because there is something wrong with the water in his area. A high Meth count ?

Reply to SoDNighthawk

Yeah mate. It is a bit of a case of that, isn't it.

You're right though, I agree, the world's human population is seemingly unsustainable and we all know that, yet how does one go about "culling" in a politically correct fashion?

Naturally, we wont, although nuclear war might be the catalyst for wide-spread mayhem and destruction.

Such sorry visions of the future are hardly palatable yet once the resources dwindle and once the world's people begin to war over those resources then I cant see a happy ending for the majority of us.

As always, it will be one people dominating another - the question is, who will that be?

One of them. His observations are brilliant. I highly recommend
Jammin' In NY, and Back In Town. Later stuff not as good. Although
his special that came out before 9/11 had a piece on looking for bombs
on planes was pointless because you could just kill a pilot with a knife...

What's it to ya'...

Going to see him the 22nd

Out of Carlin's era. . . I lean more towards Albert Brooks or David Brenner

My current favorite comedian died last year: Mitch Hedberg:

Quote :

I want to be a race car passenger--just a guy who bugs the driver. "Say, man, can I turn on the radio? You should slow down. Can I stick my feet out the window? Why do we gotta keep going in circles? Man, you really like Tide."

My wife's favorite is probably Jim Gaffigan

Quote :

:"Ever wonder what people got Jesus for Christmas? It's like 'Oh great, socks. You know I'm dying for your sins right? Yeah, but thanks for the SOCKS. They'll go great with my sandals. What am I, German?'"

and

Quote :

As voice of Manitee:"I'm a manitee!" Rebuttal:"Whatever sea cow. . ."

Reply to dwellman

In that same routine he also said that airline security was completely stupid and pointless. He also stated that "one's chances of dieing in a terrorist attack are very, very small."

He's right, they're very, very small. But somehow I don't think that's how he meant it. I think he meant that Americans don't die from terrorist attacks.

Anyways- just thought I'd point that out.

Running out of resources is going to be a gradual thing, so the signs of the time would be a lot worse than they are if your figure of 5 years would be close to the truth.

That's one of our problems in the western world, or perhaps even of the species. We can't look far enough ahead to take appropriate action to influence processes that span tens or hundreds of years, instead of the next election term. Some individuals can, but as a collective we're unable to act on it. In the far east long term vision is more appreciated than in the west but in terms of environmental policies I can't say that it shows at the moment.

I'm 100% Tom Smart and I refute that.

Reply to Tom_Smart

No, if you listen to the whole part, at the end he says terrorism will go on
and after our economy collapses they'll all come out of the woodworks.

He meant even with all the terrorism your chances of dying from it are very,
very small.

"take a f**cking chance! What are you gonna do? Eat at Wendy's and play
with your pr*ck til the end of time?

Reply to KingLoftusXII

Ha! the irony were all sat here wasting energy on are computers complaining how were all gonna run out of resources because we dont use them wisely.
