We wish to run say two Epson 1290 inkjet printers over USB on one PC. One
will have colour inks the other will have a monochrome inkset.

Can the computer recognise one from the other so that the mono ink printer
if we call it mono in the printer name box will only be sent what we want
sent to it and the colour if we call it that in the printer name box will
only print what we want to send to it.

Or will the computer get confused as the are both saying they are Epson
1290's.

Also in WIN XP if we have two identities can we say only make the 1290's
available to one identity and lets say a laser only being available to the
other identity

No it will think it is one printer.

You can install two identical printers on one USB port. WinXP will either
create a "2nd copy" under the original name or, as you propose, you can
rename one printer. This will work just fine.

No, it will not. There's no reason why what is proposed by the OP wouldn't
work.

It can be easy. Just install one printer then rename it (ex. color printer)
then install the other one and rename it (ex. b/w printer). Do NOT! leave
the name to the defalt that windows gives them. This works because the usb
ports all have a different number routed to them so you can see different
items that may be the same.

USB printers when connected create a unique key in the registry for each
printer (even those of the same model). When the driver is installed for the
second printer it should automatically append (copy2) on the end of the
printer name in the Printers and Faxes Window.
