Hi Guys,
I am thinking of buying the "ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 128 MB" Graphics
Card for my sweet little Shuttle PC.

Previously I used the graphics card that was built in on the
motherboard, but I want to be able to port the picture to my TV, and
have great graphics too, so I think this card is the one for me..(?)

Unfortunately this card does not have a VGA outlet, and I am wondering
whether I will still be able to use the existing VGA outlet for a second
monitor after I install the new graphics card? Grateful for advice if
you know the answer.

Secondly, I want to have cable TV-in and video-out + DVI out too, so
this is the right card for me, isn't it?
Any tips appreciated, as the card is expensive and I am conscious of
getting it wrong. Happy to pay the price if it will do what I want it to
and last for a couple of years or so.

Struggling to find a a UK based vendor of this card - any tips appreciated!

Regards
Johanna

Hi, this card has been out of the ATI range for 2 years and is only 2x AGP
or PCI, since this the ATI all in wonder cards have no longer been available
in PCI only AGP 4x and 8x, it is important that you know which slot your
machine has as the voltage for these cards to run is different. All these
cards will do every thing you want but will need the correct AGP slot,
Radeon versions of this card are available in the UK.

Chris,
Thanks for replying and sorry if this was a bit of a beginner's
question. (Haven't done anything technical for a couple of years after
getting a management job. I am really rusty! And hardware was never my
strong point anyway.)

Can you help me to recommend a suitable Graphics card?
I have one AGP slot and one PCI free on my Shuttle. 2.6 GB Intel CPU and
soon 1.5 GB Ram.
I want cable (Homechoice) in, and video + DVI out,
also plenty of options for future expansion, and good graphics performance.

I would be really grateful for your help - there is so much to choose
from, a bit confusing!

Regards
Jo

To address the issue that Chris brought up, the AIW 128 in
it's first incarnation is 3.3V only, not what you want. The
2nd version was the AIW 128 "PRO", which will work.

Yes it has TV-Out though it can be hit-or-miss if a
paricular card and TV are happy together... it may be fine,
you can only try it and see like with any other card.

>Unfortunately this card does not have a VGA outlet,

What's a "VGA outlet"?

It has the analog monitor output and S-Video for TV. If you
need an adapter, it should come with one in the retail box,
else be sure an "OEM" version comes with all parts needed...
the cable is ATI-specific, proprietary... it resembles an
S-Video out jack but the pins are slightly different.

No, your motherboard's onboard video is though the AGP
port. You'd need a PCI video card to be able to use both
the card and motherboard output simultaneously.

It will do cable-in, it will do video-out. It will not do
DVI-out. You'd need a newer version of All-In-Wonder to do
DVI out, one in the Radeon family.

AIW 128 Pro should not be expensive, it's a relatively old
card now. Rough guess is you should be able to find one for
the equivalent of $40 USD, perhaps even less
used/auction/etc.

Keep in mind that the OP has a SFF shuttle system, which has
more limited cooling and power supply than a regular desktop
system. Unless there is a strong need for games the
9700-9800 series is not a good choice, the lesser 9(n)00
series would be more appropriate and likely cheaper.

Thanks Chris & Kony - My machine actually has a very impressive fan and
cooling system - never seen anything like it before! It keeps the
machine relatively cool. Will give some thought on whether to take the
risk or not.. Thanks for the tip on on Overclockers - I actually bought
my existing system from them..!
Regards
Jo

The machine or the CPU? If the fan is thermally controlled
that will help, though be louder. I'd still be concerned
about the power though, it's not only marginal capacity for
this but replacements are disproportionately priced due to
their being unique (IIRC).
