My Canon S520 has been printing light bands across most photos for a
while now but now text documents are printed too faint, even on high
setting. Is head replacement likely to fix this.

Light bands? Sounds a bit like the problem I just met with S520 - a faint
rainbow added to all 6x4 prints, about half an inch wide an inch from the
end of the print.
I have been experimenting to try to identify the cause, so far it happens on
6x4 whether or not borderless, regardless of other print settings, it never
happens on A4, can see no mechanical contamination causing it.
If it were to extend to poor text printing as well (which it hasn't yet), I
would definitely look to replacement with updated Canon i865
