Its a Dell computer Pent 3 790 Mhz
Windows xp Pro sp-2
The problem started suddenly ,no apparent reason with WinXp Home
isnstalled .

The pop up screen reads "Please install a disk in Drive A " with some
disks
with other disks it reads " The disk in drive a is not formatted etc "

In attempting to troubleshoot I tried 2 other drives with cables that
worked in other computers .I also did a new install of WinXp pro SP-2
and still get the same problems .

Iv also formatted new disks in another computer with XP Pro installed
to use

Ive check the Bios but dont see any problem although I may not no
what to look for

The cables are tight and properly installed

Thanks for taking the time to help me out

TBH, just ditch the floppy. Unreliable media that costs more than a
blank CDR whilst only having less than 1/400th the capacity and
infinitely slower speed.

Cds are great, but USB thumbdrives are just as flexible, plus faster
and more resilient.

The only thing floppies are good for is flashing your BIOS. And it's a
shame we need them for that.

No, thumbdrives are not just as flexible because even many
brand-new boards can't boot from them, regardless of the
"feature" being present.

Floppies are good for many legacy utilities from hardware
manufacturers where you run a self-extracting image that
only lets you put it on floppy. Sure, there are other ways
of getting around that and/or other utilities, but suddenly
it takes more work to do same thing. It's just silly to do
without a floppy drive when they cost $10 (if you didn't
already have a stack of them) unless it's a SFF case that
just doesn't have a bay for one.

BTW, you do not need a floppy to flash a bios either. Same
bootable alternatives will work for that too. Personally I
prefer flashing from HDD, as it's more reliable in addition
to being faster. There is one exception though, a bios boot
block recovery needs a floppy, though again there are
alternatives (usually, except with soldered-on eproms) that
just take a lot more work.

I see your point. But for backup and transferring standard files from
one PC to another (ie everyday use rather than BIOS or legacy
utilities) I find thumbdrives far more convenient than either cds or
floppy. I built my last PC without a floppy and went for two years
without missing it. (Now of course it's time to upgrade the BIOS).
