I have installed a Foxconn MOBO which has 2 SATA ports.

My boot and slave drives are running off the conventional IDE port, can I
install 2 SATA drives as slaves for additional data backup.

Yes you can, just don't set them as boot drives

Yes, except there is no master/slave so they are just drives attached. Each
drive has its own port, and therefore there isn't a master/slave setup like
conventional IDE. But, I'm sure you knew that already.

is the sata faster than the ide, as far as drives go?

It depends. With a single drive, if your controller is capable of Native
Command Queuing, then yes, it can be slightly faster. If it isn't, then a
single SATA drive is roughly on-par with a single PATA. I say roughly,
because SATA can push data through faster and when the drive flushes its
cache, it goes through at a higher speed. However, the drive's physical
speed and platter density remains the same, and that's the majority of the
transfer speed.

Now, if you ran RAID 0, all bets are off. Since SATA can push through data
at a higher speed, you can reach a higher ceiling of data throughput. SATA
is definitely the way to go, there.

I have 2 ATA/133 Maxtors 7200 RPM with 8MB cache and 1 SATA 7200 RPM
with 8MB cache. The seek time of the SATA is slightly slower
according to benchmarks, but the real world performance of average
write and read to the SATA is noticibly faster. My next system will
be using all 2nd gen SATA for sure..
