Have flat ribbon 40 pin interface cable.. need Rounded!

I am looking for a rounded *40* pin IDE cable to replace the only flat
ribbon cable I have in my custom rig. This flat ribbon cable really stands
out in my modded windowed
case.

This *40* pin flat ribbon data /interface cable was supplied with my I/O
Flex FireWire& Hi-Speed USB2.0 Controller card.
The cable comes up from the PCI card to a 3.5" front panel module on my
Antec SX635 Mini Tower Case, which at the time I bought it had NO provision
for front panel USB etc.

Now before you say "just use an 80 pin rounded cable" I have, and it does
NOT work !!
In this case, I need to find a *40 pin* ROUNDED IDE cable.
I have tried other regular 40 pin flat ribbon cables and they work, so it
isn`t some special cable other than being just a 40 pin.
I have even tried "backword compatable" Rounded cables, but here again they
are 80 pin! For whatever reason this data cable *must* be 40 pin.

Any ideas here... this ribbon cable has been bugging me for awhile now.

Thanks in advance

Matt

I have not looked for such a cable myself but I have seen others at work
take the end off of a ribbon cable, roll the cable, slide heat shrink tubing
over the ribbon cable, and then they put a new end on the cable.

With a 40 pin flat cable, a very sharp hobby knife, a flat surface,
a very steady hand and half an hour might be enough for you to turn
the flat cable into a round cable. Practice on a piece of scrap
cable first. Once you have the technique it is easy to do this.

Their is no such thing as an 80 pin IDE cable they have 80 wires but only 40
pins.

Thank`s for correcting my mistatement. Yes, I meant 40 *wire*.
The Rounded cables I have used, and see on line have the 40 pin connection
but have *80* wires.
In this case I am looking for 40 wire 40 pin ROUNDED data cable

Thanks again

As Michael pointed out, you may have issues trying to use an
alternate cable due to crosstalk.

What exactly did you do when you tried to use the 80
conductor cable? On 80 conductor, pin 28 is disconnected
from the grey (middle) connector. Is it possible you need
that pin and were using the middle (grey connector)?

Use a multimeter to check continuity between the
corresponding pins, on the original cable and then on the
new cable. Because of the crosstalk issue you would be
better off getting an 80 conductor cable to work rather than
trying to find/use a 40 conductor.

Hi Kony,

I have tried using a PC toys ATA 133 80 wire 2-ends (or single drive
connection) rounded cable, but (holding it in my hand) the connectors
actually have 39 holes or connections with 1 in the center top (by the key)
blocked off.
My original (provided) flat ribbon *40* wire cable has all 40, as do my all
my other flat ribbon 40 *wire* cables I have laying around, whilst my other
80 *wire* flat ribbon cables again, only have the 39 *hole* connectors

I`m assuming I need the full *40* hole connector ends and wires, and that
this is my problem with finding a ROUNDED cable, as all seem to have the 39
hole connector?

Thanks again
Matt

You don't need all 40 pins. A few are duplicate ground or redundant.

Do you know that for a fact with a "I/O Flex FireWire& Hi-Speed USB2.0
Controller card?"

Firewire and USB headers have multiple ground pins and N/C pins too. If
you like I'll dig out a manual and list them for you.

I don't need it, he does. I just wondered since he'd already tried an 80
conductor 40 pin cable and it didn't work.

Well I have done just that, and it works just fine!
I first had to remove the second (middle) drive connector (no big deal, but
worried about all those piercings) I then just sort of folded inward 1/4 per
side from each side, and then another 1/4 till the cable was reduced enough
to slip some old plastic tubing I had split down the length, so as to get it
on and up to the connections on either end.
I then added some "store bought" blue split loom tubing I had left over from
"cleaning up" my excess power supply wires. I slipped this over my uglier
clear plastic tubing that I had stuffed the folded "flat" cable.
This isn`t what I wanted but its definetly an improvement over the flat
cable (with the unneeded an unnecessary middle drive connection), it will do
at least untill I find a commercial 40 wire ROUNDED cable

Now I know you are going to scold me about crosstalk etc. but exactly how
much of this should I be concerned with, giving this is something I use for
my joystick and USB thumb drive(s), *No* Firewire as of yet!

Thanks again to *everyone* who tried to lend a hand here.

So long as you're happy with it that's all that counts?

I have to wonder though, if you're only using a (USB1?)
joystick and a thumbdrive, why bother with this bay thing at
all instead of a simplier front-USB port(s)? Most any board
has front-port headers now. Regardless, it would tend to be
the USB2 and firewire that suffered from crosstalk, using a
joystick (again, assuming USB1) should be fine any way you
look at it.

I'd also not drawn a conclusion one way or the other about
all those (40 of 'em) wires... could be it does have
alternating ground conductors, such things are easier seen
in person than guessed/assumed/etc.

Kony,

Just to follow up on your post, my Antec SX635 mini tower case has no
opening or provision for *any ports* be they USB or whatever. I purchased
this several years ago and now note they do have such provision on their
later issues, right where my case badge is located. Also, my Soltek (KT133A
chipset) motherboard has only USB1.1 headers on board, my "bay thing"
provides USB2.
As for the 40 wire thing ....I have NO idea!

Thanks again
Matt
