Hi, I'm a 19 year old student buidling a NLE for my last year of
college and for my freelance video production career. I have 3 weeks
before I need to be editing on this machine so I don't have long!
This is the proposal so far: (I need help with motherboards!)

Dual AMD Opteron 1.8ghz
2x 1GB Corsair 5400 XMS2
2x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 250GB/16MB-NCQ in RAID0 (Media Disk)
1x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 250GB/16MB-NCQ (System Disk)
1x Generic 30GB SATA (Scratch Disk)
Matrox RT.x100
Nvidia 6800GT
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum EX
2x 21" CRT Flatscreens

Is that all going to fit well together?
What motherboards should I look at? All I
know is Tyan seem to be a contender..
Do I need ECC 'error correction' RAM for compatibility with those
Opterons?

Thankyou so much
Luke

$230 x2 from Newegg: http://tinyurl.com/87836
$460 subtotal.

" 2x 1GB Corsair 5400 XMS2 "

You'll need PC3200 ECC Registered DDR with Opterons.
$566 for 2x 1GB XMS: http://tinyurl.com/dkgmp
$1,026 subtotal

" 2x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 250GB/16MB-NCQ in RAID0 (Media Disk)
1x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 250GB/16MB-NCQ (System Disk)
1x Generic 30GB SATA (Scratch Disk) "

$165 x3 just for the Maxtors: http://tinyurl.com/8tj9v
$1,521 subtotal

" Matrox RT.x100 "

$989.50 : http://tinyurl.com/9tdhs
$2,510.50 subtotal

" Nvidia 6800GT "

$299.99 for the cheapest 6800GT at Newegg: http://tinyurl.com/9kbyn
$2,810.49 subtotal

" Audigy 2 ZS Platinum EX "

Newegg didn't have the EX, but this one is $159.99 :
http://tinyurl.com/arfxc
$2,970.48 subtotal

" 2x 21" CRT Flatscreens "

$364.00 x2 for the cheapest ones: http://tinyurl.com/9otgz
$3,698.48 subtotal

.....and you still have to buy a case, power supplies and a motherboard.
It'll end up costing you closer to $4,500 than the $2,500 you budgeted
for. I guess you need a rethink on your components.

Not necessarily. PC2700 is fine for up to the 244, and 2700 or 3200 is
optional for the 246. Specific requirements depend on the MoBo. Also, ECC
depends on the MoBo.
