I have a card reader that if I plug into USB ports on any XP computer auto
installs & shows up as 4 drives in Device manager & also as 4 "removable
disk" in My Computer.
Now the problem I have is that on another similar comp with XP but only SP1
installed, it shows up as 4 in Device Manager but only 2 in My Computer.
I've tried other USB ports to no effect.
Is it possible that somewhere there is a restriction on number of drives?
There are already quite a few letters allocated as it is used for running
POS gear & there are 3 network drives.
I know on 98 you could limit drive letters to A---G or such.
Could it be in the bios?
A dif card reader has the same problem. It is got to be in the setup
somewhere.

Have you tried putting cards into the slots and see if they can be read?
I have a multi-card reader, but the only slots that show up are the ones in
which I have already inserted cards. The unused slots don't show up yet.
Once mapped to Drive letters, though, they persist regardless of whether a
card is in the slot.

Did you use TweakUI for XP to reduce the number of available drive
letters on that pc? If not, use it to see if any were unchecked.

Well a bit of update.
One of the main slots that I do need to work on the card is the Compact
Flash slot.
On card reader 1 that slot won't show even with the card in it. (formatted &
all).
On another card reader that slot (luckily) is one of the two that does show
up so I swapped card readers for her.
That is a good suggestion about TweakIU, I'll do that next chance but at
least it's going now. Suspect that SP2 might fix it anyway?
Thanks for your suggestions.
