i've got around 500 pounds to spend on putting together an athlon 64 system.
what would be best to go for. mostly this machine will be used for gaming
and also i would like to overclock too. i would like to keep it future proff
pretty much too.

It's not like there's only one brand or model you'd be
limited to, primarily you'd want skt 939, at least 1GB of
CAS2.5 memory (to lower cost over CAS2.0 type), a good
(aftermarket) heatsink and power supply, and of course the
video card. Specific CPU depends on how far the budget
stretches, if we could have it all for 500 then who'd spend
more?
If you're not anxious to build it quickly then itemize what
you need and buy when you see deals on the parts, buying CPU
and video card last as those parts technologically
depreciate (or are displaced by faster models at same price
points) more rapidly. For example, if you don't have the
case and power yet, buy those and tweak the case for good,
quiet airflow, have it unquestionably sufficient before ever
putting parts into it.
