Is there much difference in hard drive performance for an older 8-20 GB
hd that has max. ATA-66 performance when using 40 wire flat cable versus
80 wire? What about diff between flat and round cables? Assuming length
is held constant. Anyone recommend a quality cable mfg/vendor?

You need an 80 wire cable to reach ATA100 Speeds or do ultra ATA. Using
the fastest DMA5 Dynamic Memory you can get the fastest speed
possible. Cables are recommended to be no more than 18 inches long to
prevent data loss. Shorter is better.
