I got me a dead computer. :(

Here's the issue... I had an Adaptec RAID controller w/ 2 WD 80 Gb drives, RAID 1. I need to get the data off the drives. My thoughts would be to install the drivers on another PC, shut down, and install the PCI card & HDDs. Then boot up and copy the data off.

Any thoughts / suggestions / tips for me?

Here's a tip. When caught up in a raid, pass your stash to a stooge.

I think he IS the stooge.....

Technically, you would only need to connect one of the drives-- in fact you may try to connect it read only via standard IDE or USB to IDE. . . otherwise, there's nothing wrong with installing the card drive combo as is in another PC

Well, yeah, Adaptec's site did say to plug in only one drive to break a mirror. My problem was that the PC is dead...I was going to plug the whole mess into my other PC, then boot it and let it find it and make sure all was well, then reboot and disconnect a drive...

Do you think it would work without the RAID controller?

Hopefully, all that will do the trick. I'll let y'all know... Since there are two drives, maybe I'll try it with one direct to IDE and see if it works. If it doesn't, I still have the other one to hook to the RAID card...

That's the beauty of RAID 1. . .

No. The drive has RAID information in the boot sector that wouldn't allow a normal BIOS to read it. The BIOS would likely tell you to format it (or give you the "insert system disk" error).

At least that's my understanding...

But it can't hurt to try w/o the card. If it don't work- then install the RAID card.

Install the card, break the mirror, import as foreign disk within Disk Management, I believe.

If you try booting up to that drive on another PC, you'll most likely end up with a blue screen. Adding it in as a slave drive, you'll have to break the mirror and then you'll want to import it as a foreign disk. That should allow it to show up.

Anything else you attempt will want to format the disk. Do not convert to a basic disk if asked; it'll basically wipe your drive.

That should be it.. but then again, I'm sick and on medication right now....

nrg... it never ends... :(

I installeed the RAID card and a 20 Gb drive into my PC, Win found it... Cool 8) . Shut down, hooked up drives to RAID card, booted, BIOS found it as storage, old share name... 8) :D !!!

So I thought I had 12 Gb of stuff or so on the drive... 35 Gb in My Music... 65 Gb total... 8O

So now I have to backup what I can, break the mirror, install one drive in the toaster tomorrow, copy everything over to it, then install the other drive... NRG!!! :x
