Really good article on how M$ has fuc*ked up Vista. This is pretty big considering how much a Microsoft fan boy Paul Thurrott is.

Me to lazy to read whole thing.

Can you give the major points of why it is screwed up?

I did start reading it, but then realized it is loooong.

Does it just tell about M$ problems or actual software issues?

Lame complaints at best.

I don't think they're lame. What's missing in Vista is a fundamental difference from XP.

What is practically different in Vista? Nothing! The only major visible difference from XP is WPF/Avalon. The rest is stuff that WinXP already does, but Vista promises to do better.

At the end of the day we'll have waited 6 years for a new M$ OS. And what do we have to show for it? Not a whole lot IMO.

The major points are that Vista is not going to be what was promised in 2003... or even in 2005. Essentially, M$ has removed so many "groundbreaking" features that it is really nothing more than an update to WinXP. Much like 98 was to 95. I don't particularly have a problem with making "updates", God knows 98 was a godsend. But we've waited 6 god damn years for a new OS and this is what we're getting?! It's a disappointment. Plain and simple. What makes things worse is WinXP is actually an excellent OS and I like it. It's leaps and bounds above Win98/ME.

Apparently however, Vista will be semi-necessary for gamers as DX10 is supposed to be for Vista only. So even though M$ has removed so much crap from it, they're finding ways to make people upgrade to it.

It's pretty shi*tty if you ask me. Clearly M$ is in a bit of a situation and they're unfortunately taking it out on the consumer simply because they can. I'm sure they'll end support for WinXP fairly quickly (2 years?) after Vista is released. That's one of M$'s ways to get people and corporations to migrate.

F*uckers.

Among these missing features are the various Vista Ultimate Extras (features and services), including a Texas Hold-em game that was developed by the people behind Windows Calendar and Sidebar, Virtual PC Express, Media Center support for the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender, automatic hard disk defragmentation, themed slideshows, Windows Movie Maker HD, and so on.

Woh woh woh! That's OS selling stuff there.

Well, I dont like the sounds of that. I dont want be part of some kind of "corprocrocy".

MP, we should get big guts Michael Moore on the case what with his hat half-slung back off his head, 1980s fringe hanging out; his askant and impervious personality kicked into overdrive as he interviews Vista's creators/migrators.

He could call it "Vistitus: The Microsoft Pathology."

I would argue that you can't actually find anything that's better. Only thing that might be better is WPF. Everything else that was supposed to be "better" was stripped out. EFI, WinFS, etc.

Oh and now we have even more teers of Windows.

Vista Starter
Vista Basic
Vista Premium
Vista Business
Vista Enterprise
Vista Ultimate

So now we have to PAY for things that WinXP already does. Things like HDTV support, DVD authoring, podcasting, performance tuning, and such. But we still don't have basic things like anti-virus. Oh but we're getting spyware protection- which anyone w/ antivirus software already has.

It's ridiculous!

Such an arguement would be quite stupid.

I'm short on time so i'll have to make this quick.

Read and weep.

And how many do we have of XP?

less than the number of OSX versions that have come out in the same time period.

in 6 years there have been 5 OSX relesases. in the same six years there has been XP pro, home, media centre, and in poor countries XP lite.

You're joking right?

There's no "XP Lite" out there is there? Its that ludicrous to actually sound real to me.

Reply to BomberBill

There is. It's a basic cheapo version to try to stop piracy.

It's a opinion piece guy seems bent out of shape about a OS that isn't retail yet.

Still some improvements over XP. At least it's not going backward.
And I ain't paying for it. [/shrugs]

If im not mistaken there is a 32 bit version for all of the Vista levels and Microsoft is releasing a DX10 patch for XP. Although it sounds as if you'd never need to get Vista, I am certain Microsoft will phase out XP as they did with all other OS's. And I agree that Vista has been chopped to pieces. That all too mighty replacement for FAT32 and NTFS that was supposed to make things run faster was cut out in the Ultimate version even. And I also believe that they scrapped something else that was designed to make everything look generaly "better." I believe there was one more thing but I can't remember.

XP Home, Professional, Tablet, Media Center, Server 2003 Standard, Server 2003 Enterprise. . .

Counting the stripped down version for "emerging" economies, I count 7 versions of XP.

Reply to dwellman

Windows 2003 is not a version of Windows XP. All versions of 2003 are server based. You cannot buy a desktop version of 2003; therefore Win2003 is not XP and should not be considered as such.

Sooo...

There's really 4 versions (not including XP lite). That said I did forget about Tablet and MCE when I was bitching about more versions of Vista.

Your post forced me to reminisce of WindozeME and the similarities to Vista :P

Windows ME is the upgrade to Windows 98, which is a buggy browser running on top of a 32-bit extension and graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor, written by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition!

Close but i think M$ will actually do this.....Example below
They will subdivide the subdivisions.....

Vista Starter Home
Vista Starter Professional
Vista Starter Tablet
Vista Starter Media Center

Vista Basic Home
Vista Basic Professional
Vista Basic Tablet
Vista Basic Media Center

Vista Premium Home
Vista Premium Professional
Vista Premium Tablet
Vista Premium Media Center

Vista Business Home

Vista Enterprise Home

Vista Enterprise Media Center

Vista Ultimate Home

WTF? Vista Starter Professional? 8O

Starter and Professional should not be in the same label given a sensible product labeling strategy, so you're probably right.

What I hate about M$ releasing a new OS?

The fawking 1 1/2 years of people constantly whining about trying to illegally get a copy of it.

I think they should make a base OS for $50. Every add-on you want costs 15-20 dollars..that way, they know what to work on and what not to work on.

Seriously, does anyone really use anything in the Accessibility folder? Save me $15 on that one.

It's actually called "Starter Edition". It's limited to 800 x 600 resolution, and you can't run more than 2 apps at once.

Basically, MS spent few extra $$ to make it "cheaper" and made sure that nobody in their right mind would want to use it.

I hope they'll keep Classic theme in all editions. It took only few months for me to get tired of Luna. Same thing will probably happen with Aero/Aero Glass.
