Hello,

I just installed HL2 on my acer aspire 2025, using the newer Omega drivers, 2590 I think. When I play, from time to time (pretty inconsistant), the game will lag and the sound will skip or loop a little, then the game will continue on. Any idea what could be causing this? Is it loading something? or maybe the video drivers?

Oh, and by loading, I mean in places where the game does not explicitly say it's loading.

Thanks.

I've the same prob.

ValvE says they're working on it. They also say only a small minority of people is experiencing this, but I think that minority is not that small if you see all the posts on the steam forums.

Looks like it's a steam bug because I also experience it with HL:Source (less, but its still there) and CS:S (only when loading a new map).

i get it as well, it seems more prevalent at the start but is very rare now. Usually tends to happen after an area load.

You know, it's funny. In HL1 I actually had some sound problems that could only be fixed by disabling features. Yet in HL2 on the very same system I've had flawless sound. :\

I'd wager that it really is a small minority that are affected. In this case however it's a very vocal small minority of what is likely a very large total user base. Between all of the people who got HL2 vouchers with their video cards and all of the people who bought before or on the first day of its official release, I'd bet there's already a huge user base.

I get this as well but it isn't quite as bad, it is just a little 1/2 second or so skip for me. It seems to happen on nearly every trigger in the game :( Hopefully there is some fix for it in the works because it does it for me in HL2 and HL Source and it is anoying.

It has to do with textures loading into the gfx card memory actually. ValvE says it's testing a fix now, to be released soon. Check out steam forums to read up on it. There's also a dedicated site for it:

Thx for the link. The patch is now being pushed through steam, so hopefully all those experiencing this sound studder will soon be happy gamers again.

Oh, its nice to see i'm not the only one, and that I don't have to plunk down a few hundred for a new faster Hard drive. But I guess it's bad this problems exists to begin with.

Glad that valve is already addressing this problem so soon though.

I had the problem on one system and not the other. Same video card, drivers, soundcard too. The A64 studdered for 1-2 seconds at most, while the P4 didn't at all for some odd reason. But the patch that autoloaded from steam when i turned on the PC yesterday completely fixed the sound studder for me. I played for 2 hours last night and didn't hear it once.
