So, if I do a clean reinstall of XP, I don't need SP1 anymore, right?
Just SP2? Yes?

Yep, I did exactly that same procedure four days ago on a new installation; works
perfectly.

Just slipstream SP2 into your disc and be done with it.

A very useful suggestion, and not hard to do, have a look here;
http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/12-p1.php for the guide I used (with no
problems).

Or google for something like slipstream sp2 xp, or something similar.

What this does BTW, is to create a fully working XP installation cd, just
like your original cd but with all of the SP2 files incorporated / updated,
and it's perfectly legal and definitely recommended.

Before you get too carried away, just be aware that MANY are having BIG, BIG
troubles after installing SP2. In fact a lot are even after SP1.
I'm one of them.
On my computer I lose all my sound & can't access my "other identities" in
OE. Several other smaller issues as well.
I think that there are just too many paranoid people out there
scaremongering. I mean, really, who would bother hacking into my computer?
Anyway, after several attempts to install XP Pro & then add in all the SP's
& other patches, I just ended up installing XP Pro & just adding the couple
of patches that patch some security holes. No more blue screens & everything
works OK for me.
Do a google search for SP1 or SP2 problems & you'll see what I mean.

Talking of scaremongering the latest report shows only 10% of 44,000
canvassed users have had issues with SP2.
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=46200368

I've installed it on my XP Pro and two XP Home systems with no problems. If
you're going to google to learn more make sure its balanced and look for
stories about your type of setup. Shaun.

NO, the great majority have no problems with SP2.

"recommended"....NO!

Clean install XP the SP2 works fine and might take 1/2 hour longer. How
long does it take to build a working slipstreamed SP2 CD? How many times
will you save that 1/2 hour?

First time you have to do a repair install - you'll save a HELL of a
lot more than 1/2 hour as you don't have to straighten out "version hell".

But for most folks, it's insurance. That is, you do it, and you
pray that it's purely wasted time B)

It takes less than 5 minutes to unpack SP2 into the 'xp-cd' folder I have on
my hard disk, and about another 10 mins to create the iso and burn it. So
it takes me less than half an hour and I have a clean SP2 installation disk,
unlike your method where you will have leftover files from your update and
have to waste the half hour again, next time you re-install.

It's a simple procedure, saves time and gives you a cleaner install,
recommended....YES, but that's just my humble opinion.
