I have one of the first Linksys WRT54G and was wondering on the opinion on
firmware upgrade. The Linksys website suggests not to upgrade if everything
is running okay, which it is. But am I missing out on more functionality
(which there is some)
Just wondering what some other opions might be on upgrading

Go and read the notes of the upgrade and see if anything effects you.

In this instance, the usually good advice not to mess with firmware unless
you're having a problem is not necessarily the best answer. I also had an
early-model WRT54G and updated the firmware. I'm glad I did.
Depending on just how old your existing unit/firmware is, you may get a whole
bunch of important new capability -- like a better firewall in the router and
WPA (instead of WEP) security (added in ver. 1.30.1).
Do it -- but do a little research on the Linksys website first (a list of
changes is at http://www.linksys.com/download/ve [...] _ver.txt). And mind
the warnings not to attempt a firmware upgrade over a wireless connection.
