Missing File Menu Commands

I am running Windows ME and recently discovered that my File Menu and View
Menu in Windows Explorer appear to have been altered. Previously, when I
clicked on "File", the first option was always "New" which allowed me to
create new folders. This option has disappeared not only from the File Menu,
but also within applications, so that the only way I can create a new folder
is through an MS-DOS window. My ability to view "thumbnails" has also
disappeared. I have run antivirus and spyware programs and have found no
infections. Would anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what happened, and
how to repair or correct it? Thanks in advance!
(My guess is that the Registry has somehow been altered. The only bulletin I
could find that was somewhat related concerned the missing Most Recently Used
(MRU) option in Windows 2000, however, that problem was blamed on Tweak UI
which I am not running)

To add to Alan's comments.

If indeed you have a nVidia graphics card and recently updated the drivers
it is likely that you will have lost more than just the New option but
also the ability to select thumbnail view in Windows Explorer and perhaps
also the ability to share individual folders. If this is the case post
back and I will post a copy of the necessary registry fix. That which
Alan has referred you to will only restore the missing New option.

Hi Mike, You guys are awesome ..... I have not checked on my ability to share
folders, but have lost the ability to view thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
I've already applied the Registry patch Alan suggested, so what is next? P.S.
I'm not too pleased with nVidia right now (should have kept my original ATi
Radeon card!)

Since you are using the web interface to these newsgroups you won't be
able to access the patch if I were to post it as an attachment so if you
want the patch please mail me and I will send it you be return. You can
use the mail address that appears below my signature.

Incidentally the problem has nothing as such to do with the nVidia drivers
or hardware but is instead the result of a badly written installer
program.

You probably installed an update for your nVidia card.
Try here:
New folder missing

Restore NEW command

Alan, Thank you ..... your response was not only prompt, but right on point.
The Registry patch fixed the problem. P.S. I installed updated drivers for
the nVidia card over a month ago, but didn't notice this problem until
recently. Based on the comments with the Registry patch, nVidia should
consider reprogramming it's installation program. Thanks again.

Good!

Is this the information in the patch?

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\Directory\shellex\ExtShellFolderViews\{8BEBB290-52D0-11d0-B7F4-00C04FD706EC}]
"Attributes"=dword:60000000

46,34,2d,30,30,43,30,34,46,44,37,30,36,45,43,7d,00

If so, I may add something like this for future posts:

Make up a file from the lines below. Copy into a file called
thumbnail.reg which should be created in Notepad. Do not retype, copy
in case of errors. The 1st line in the file is the line REGEDIT4
Make sure your mail or news reader does not add any spaces to the end
of a line.
The last line must be blank.
Doubleclick thumbnail.reg

-----copy below this line thumbnail.reg------------

Alan,

The entries you mention are only part of the entries that are removed by
the nVidia installer. The easiest fix that has a 100% success rate to
date (well over 100 e-mail requests so far) has been to restore the entire
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\Directory key.

Cheers,

Alan,

To be honest all that is needed for most users is the contents the file
from Aumha plus the key/values in your previous post so I feel it would be
well worth merging the two and posting that. The only thing then missing
is the folder sharing bits and few mention this as being a problem -
probably because their PCs aren't on a LAN.

Mike,

Let me bounce this response off you before I make it standard:

New folder missing and thumbnail problem.

Make up a file from the lines below. Copy into a file called fix.reg
which should be created in Notepad. Do not retype, copy in case of

You just caught me Alan as I'm heading out for the rest of the day!

That look good although I would make one small suggestion and that is to
make them both either HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES rather than one of each. Not that it
matters since they are in reality both the same key so perhaps for brevity
make them both HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory.

Hi,
I also was a victim of the NVidia card install but I got my New and
Thumbnail
menu options back with a Registry Restore. I notice that I still have File
sharing
capability (at least the option is in my menu). My question is how do I find
out
if anything else is missing? Do I need your patch or is that everything that
was
messed with?

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

If a registry restore, by which I am assuming you mean you used scanreg
/restore, fixed the missing New and thumbnail problems it would have at
the same time restored any other missing entries. I'd therefore think
you're good to go but if at some time in the future you feel that you
might have a problem drop me a line and I will send you the patch which
restores the entire HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory tree in the registry
however I doubt you'll need it.
