Hello.
I have borrowed a notebook computer from my education
institute. It comes with a dial-up account but I'd like to
use my persisting broadband connection of my desktop
computer (with Win 98 SE and Win XP Pro installed).
The broadband connection is 'always on'. (It automatically
connects to the Internet when I log on to Windows. I don't
know how to say this in computerese :| ) When I
subscribled to the service, all I need to do was the plug
the network cable to the LAN card and both Windows in my
desktop detects the connection automatically and no
configurations were required.
However, when I unplug the cable from my desktop and plug
it to the notebook, Win ME doesn't detect the connection
automatically like the Windows in my desktop does. How can
I fix this?
Any help are greatly appreciated.
PS: I'm suspecting the LAN card in my notebook isn't
functionly properly? How can I carry out a diagnosis on
it? Thanks again.

First of all Xero you need to check out that lan card....
Easy way to do this is to
Start > settings> control panel > system and look for network
adapters
Click the + next to network adapters and see what's listed. You
usually see a dialup adapter, a network card, perhaps 1394 or bluetooth
if the laptop is equipped.
If it is showing up as enabled and working properly then carry on, if
not, you need to find the driver for your laptop for the network card
as a starting point.
Start > run type in
winipcfg
click ok
You will get a new window up with a drop down box in it. Choose the
network adapter (not the dialup or other adapters) and look at the IP.
If the ip starts 169. or you have not got one, then keeping the network
cable in the laptop, reboot the machine
Check again using winipcfg to see if you have got an ip that does not
start 169. If you do, then you need to do some network
troubleshooting.
