PC2100 vs PC1600

Hello all,

A couple of years ago I built a computer around an SIS k7s5a MB, using
a 1.2 gig AMD Duron.(bus speed = 100mhz). I only put one RAM module in
-- a pc1600 - 256mb - DDR - non-ecc 184 pin DIMM (there are 2 ddr DIMM
slots.) I want to add 256 mb of memory, but pc1600 memory is very hard
to find. My questions are:

Will the pc2100 work AT ALL with my 100mhz fsb?(I know pc2100 is
designed to run on a M/B with a 133mhz bus speed, but I have read that
it will work at 100 mhz)

if the answer to the above question is "yes":
Can I use a 256 mb pc2100 DIMM in my second DDR slot- keeping the
pc1600- , or would I have to go to one pc2100 module of 512mb (or 2
pc2100 256mb modules) to get my desired 512mb ram?

The speed rating is how fast it will go ('officially'), not what it 'must
be'. PC2100 will operate at 100 Mhz FSB and behave like a PC1600 stick at
that speed.

There is no 'memory' reason why it wouldn't work but the K7S5A can be picky
about memory, or at least that what others say. Mine simply worked with the
cheapest junk I could find.

IIRC you should, in theory, be able to stick a card of pc2100 in there
and it will run at the lower speed of the pc1600. Whether or not your
specific motherboard will handle it, I don't know.

Cheers,

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my

Thanks to all who responded,

My real problem was the scarcity and (oddly enough) higher price of
the slower PC1600 ram. I have found a source from which I can get a
256 MB stick of PC1600 for less than the going price of PC2100. So I
won't have to test the compatibility of the different speed modules on
my motherboard.

Again: THANK YOU for your help! Usenet is still the best source of
technical info in the world.
