I know that when using Windows 98, you can F8 while starting the computer
and get a startup screen offering a bunch of ways to go. One of those ways
is Command Prompt Only.

I have a friend that needs to do a DOS scandisk of his computer, but can't
get into DOS to do it.

Any ideas?

Bobbie,

Your friend needs to boot their PC using a boot floppy. One of the
consequences of the removal of real mode from Win Me is that it cannot be
booted to a DOS prompt like earlier Win9x systems such as Win 98.

If he doesn't have a boot floppy he can create a boot floppy (EBD) or
start up disk as follows:
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Startup Disk and follow the prompts.

If he gets asked for the location of a "missing" file point the wizard
towards the Win Me cab files which should be in either the
windows\options\cabs or windows\options\install folder. Alternatively
point to the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD. Specifically look for the
file BASE2.CAB and then point the wizard at the folder containing
base2.cab..

If he is unable to create a boot floppy you can download the image of a
Win Me OEM boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. Download to your desktop,
double click to run and follow the prompts to transfer the image to a
floppy.
