I heard there was a new worm to be let loose this weekend called MyDoom.
How do I check my free AVG to make sure that this virus is in their
database?
Thanks, Eileen

MyDoom has been around since 2003 although it is continually evolving with
the latest version possibly being W32.Mydoom.AZ@mm. For details of this
version see

As to whether AVG is checking for this particular worm, have you checked
the Grisoft site (http://www.grisoft.com/?

Went to Grisoft site and found info on MyDoom but couldn't tell if it was in
their database to stop it on my free AVG.

There are new MyDoom variants and McAfee VirusScan and the McAfee removal tool Stinger was
recently updated for them.

Stinger -- http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

2/18/2005
Added W32/Mydoom.bc - bd@MM

2/16/2005
Added W32/Mydoom.ao - bb@MM

As for AVG I can't speak for their updates. You would have to check the Grisoft web site
and see if they have information.

Whilst at the same time doubling the cost of renewing their subscription
for those who have been paying for eTrust AV since it became a paid for AV
application (previously having been the free InoculateIT). It looks like
their loyal user base is paying for the free offer. :-( OK, so US$19.95
won't break the bank but ii is double the US$9.95 I've paid for each of
the last three years.

Thanx for that Mike. I was not aware of the price structuring. I kind of have a disdain
for the company Computer Associates. That began when they bought BitCom. It didn't help
when the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) brought key charges against the several
CAI corp. officers. I still use Bitware for my FAX software and I have come to like
Arcserve enterprise backup software.

The AV software offering has improved greatly as well. It may well be worth the price. Of
course, you can always choose from the other freebies...

ClamWin -

AVAST -

To be honest Dave I'd still recommend eTrust AV as it has worked
flawlessly for me here over the years. It's not a resource hog and
updates itself regularly. For example just an hour ago I see I received 6
incremental signature update patches in one session (8944-8949) all of
which seem to have been released in the last six hours. I'll probably
renew my sub but am tempted to claim to be a new user and go for a
freebie. :-)

I find AVG a bit clunky for my taste and the free version seems to have
some problems in updating due to possibly restricted server access. I'm
not so sure about Clam, not because it's open source but because I don't
think it has real time scanning. I've got Avast running on one PC here at
the moment so am withholding judgement until I've given it a few more days
usage.

Cheers,

Mike, this problem seems to have been totally cleared up now - or at least
it has been updating fine here, for the past couple of weeks or so.

That's good to read Mart, not because I'm thinking of changing but more
because of the number of friends who I've managed to wean off NAV and are
now running AVG. I'd hate them all to think I'd sole them a turkey.

Good to hear Mike and absolutely no problems are being experienced with AVG7
(free) here. I shall certainly be sticking with it until or unless anything
better comes along. With the daily auto-scheduler (updates and scanning)
running in the background, I hardly notice it. Excellent value for money <g>

AFAIK, the current CAI "free offer" is for the bundled EZ Armor package,
which is the eTrust AV and the CAI-rebranded version of the free Zone Alarm.
So the renewal price reflects both updated products.

For those users so incapable as to be still running naked without either
protective tools, such an offer is a godsend, IMO, esp., to the rest of us
who would be at risk by such ignorant / inconsiderate computing. They are
helped and we are protected. The price is fair, IMO.

Jack,

Just a couple of points. I know what I have bought, know what I am being
asked to renew and know how much that is (US$19.95). The renewal price
has nothing whatsoever to do with the free EZArmor other than my slight
tongue in cheek suggestion that the long term subscribers to EZAV are
being asked to fund CA's free offer.

Ah, I think I musunderstood.

If I understand you now, CAI has doubled the renewal price for the
stand-alone eTrust AV, from $10 to $20, for a year of signature updates.
I have only been asked to update the Armor bundle yet, on a XP box, and
haven't seen the stand-alone price yet for another XP machine. As you know,
my usual WinME machine, for plying the ng's, uses NAV 2004, for testing.

Am I correct?
If so, I suspect your tongue in cheek suggestion is, indeed, quite correct.
I suppose we should view it as insurance for the internet computing
community, where all of us are somewhat better protected now. Far too many
users are still running naked.

Yes. Previously March 2002 - $10 (purchase as upgrade from free
InoculateIT), 2003 - $10 renewal and 2004 - $10 renewal. 2005 - $20
renewal.

As now have I although I can't remember where it is installed. :-)
Savings = $20 (Plus a FREE Upgrade if you renew now!)
Renewal price = $29.95
