I find it difficult to understand how you managed to arrive at where you are
now, from where you were a week ago - perhaps there's something you're not
telling us????

First boot to Safe Mode, and check out Device Manager for
duplications/errors, and while there, run Belarc, and install Everest

then post back with some real (actual!) data

hi,
(actual data) i will try. recent post 2/21 SPYBOT. problem was fixed, so i
thought. i also used immunization (advance mode). I scanned 2/24 found :
Media plex 1, Advertizing.com 2, Ave a. inc 1, Double click 1, DSO.exploit 2,
Huntbar 1.
Aside of this issue. which i continue to try and resolve
On 2/22 i installed mozilla/firefox.browser. chose to uninstall. control
panel > deleted. did not interest me.
Today, ez trust-anti virus found : 2viruses
c restore\ temp win32. tibser h trojan A0127976 & A0127980. with an
additional 30+ files unable to scan. ?
For more information it would have required me to click their web site ,
and all i needed to do was click www.ca etc... instead , I received
error..UNABLE TO START WEB BROWSER. and I have noticed Firefox has appeared
in other areas.
The question whether when I deleted Mozilla/Firefox from Control Panel is
there any other changes that need to be completed. For ex. should I go to
C: win > appl data > Moz/Fire> Prof> xxxxx default. and DELETE ?
Or do I merely go to System Restore. and set date to prior installation of
Moz/Fire. or leave well enough alone. i get the jitters the thought of Safe
Mode. and getting stuck. But, I will in a short while when grands come over.
winme oem
ie6
cable connection.
aol broadband.

later, noel and harry ... boni.

For what it is worth.......Firefox is not the cause of your problems. I
have been using it for a while now and it is excellent!! If you removed it
via Add/Remove, it may have left some folders on your Hard Drive. I usually
remove those manually.....but try a System Restore to before you put it on.

As for Safe Mode, I just finished a scan and defrag in it and I will give
you the instructions on how to get into it......and when you are finished,
you just go to Start/ReStart and it will automatically come up in Normal
Mode, with a few scattered icons that you can rearrange.

Start/Restart......and hold down the Ctrl (sometimes it is F8) key while
your computer is shutting down and rebooting.......this will bring up a
black and white screen with 4 choices.......pick #3 which is Safe Mode. A
Help screen will come up, but close it.

OK...you are now in Safe Mode. Do the Scandisk and then Defrag in that
order and when finished, click Start/Restart and it will reboot into Normal
Mode.

Good luck.....it is quite easy once you do it a time or two. But this is
the best way to do the above.

Cheers......Heather.......and if you have any more questions, just ask.

heather: thanks for making it look easy for me to follow. I will write down
your directions. Just for the record the cause for my not appreciating
Firefox was probably that I would click and it opened to a Google Search.
Then I was trying to change my profile/email address and couldn't.
Recently I switched to Optimum Online/cable from DSL/MSN, it prompted me
to change my email address.
I guess I just didn't how to make changes in Firefox.
But be as it may, I might give it a try?
And it is good to know that Firefox isn't causing whatever is going on.

ciao.. boni.

Heather miuch appreciated the guidance. Just finished ( 6hrs) Scan
disk/Defrag on Safe Mode.
When completed and then restarted a blue screen message read:
There are no stack pages ..necessary to increase the settings of MinSPs in
System.INI to prevent possible stacks faults. There are currently 3 SPs
allocated. click any key. ? Then pc went back to Normal :)

But, prior to starting the whole Safe Mode today I received on screen
message which I have NOT seen in weeks, reads:
TASK SCHEDULER SERVICE
Some task did not execute at their scheduled times because the Task
Scheduler Service was not running. You can view the list of missed tasks and
attempt to run them again, from within the Scheduled Task folder.
These were in the folder: Maintenance Disk Clean up / Spybot / Tune-up
Appl.start including ( Scan-disk and Defrag which I just completed).
Could I have run the other Task on Safe Mode as well ? let me know.
I had mentioned before that I deleted Firefox from Control Panel.
What should I do first to Restore It ? thanks, boni.

Hi Boni.....

I can answer some of your questions, but will let the experts answer the
MinSP ones....I know I changed mine and recall that it is in increments of
4, but will let one of them tell you. I just checked mine and it is set at
4. But I have upped it to 8 one time, I believe.

Glad to hear you got Scandisk and Defrag done.....but 6 hours?? Have you
not done it for a long time?

As for Firefox.....just download it again and open it. Unless you saved it
as an unopened program on your hard drive. You no longer have it on there,
in other words. I am still poking around finding out about extensions, etc.
There are certain things I love about it, and no popups is one of them. I
find it is faster than IE as well. Yet you need IE to go to Windows Update
for critical patches, etc.

Task Scheduler....I have mine disabled. And have had it that way for a long
time. I just checked in Control Panel/Scheduled Tasks and each of the 5 are
disabled. I right-clicked each one and at the bottom left, the 'enabled'
box is unchecked. I assume that it how I disabled them. Again, the experts
here can verify this.....

Glad to hear that things are sorting themselves out. I wish I could answer
all of your questions, but the MVP's will be able to do so.

Cheers....Heather

Hi Heather, In response to your question the answer isYes. It has been a
while since I Defrag / Scandisk my system. My PC is over 4y/o. And the first
time I Defrag/Scan on Safe Mode :). Successful I might add. Q. Should all
other Scheduled Task other then just Defrag/Scandisk be done on Safe Mode ?
On the the subject of MinSP, still waiting..
I just checked and I found Firefox in C: Win , will I just need to click to
start over?
Would appreciate the MVP's on the subject of disablling "all tasks" in
Task Scheduler.
Just checked out the 10/16 entry Using Firefox..... newsgroup. will be
useful.
On my way out and follow up later this evening .
Ciao..boni

This was the *first time* you ever scandisked & defragged in over 4 years??
Mindboggling!!

One of the MVP's should be able to advise you on the MinSP
question......also on the Task Scheduler because I don't use it.

Re Firefox.....you don't say what you have found, but I should think you
will have to redownload the program.....uninstalling them leaves a folder or
two behind in Windows Explorer a lot of the time.

Cheers....Heather

Heather, hi.
what I said was first time on Safe Mode.
Re Firefox... I found Mozilla folder in C: and on the right side of the
screen there is Firefox and registry.
again, the same question that is not answered 2/22. Can I run the additional
tasks that are in Task Scheduler in Safe Mode ?
I will continue to fix things on this end.
ciao. boni

You can increase the number of stack pages by adding the line:
MinSPs=8
to the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file and then restarting your
computer.

You can do this either using Notepad and editing system.ini directly or by
using MSConfig and going to the System.ini tab. The KB recommends
increasing the number of stack pages in increments of 4 however in your
case I would first try setting MinSPs=8.

See MS KB 149083 -"There Are No Spare Stack Pages"

Hi Mike,
In Notepad I was able to find the (386Enh) Q. when the instructions are add
or edit does that mean that I can remove the #'s 386Enh from within the ( )
and write MinSPs=8 ? example (MinSPs=8), then restart computer. or do I add
the MinSPs=8 along side . Sorry , just need to be clear on my end.
thanks for your help. boni.

Hi Boni......

It is very hard for me to see what you are seeing.......if you uninstalled
Firefox from Add/Remove, then you uninstalled most of the program. I am
looking at my Windows Explorer and under Programs.....

Click on the + sign beside it and you should have at least 9 subfolders,
(plugins, uninstall, defaults, etc) and 4 of these have subfolders of their
own. The size when I highlight *Mozilla Firefox* is 8.44 MB and Firefox.exe
is 6467 kb. If none of that is the same then just remove that folder (or
leave it in there if you want)......but download Firefox again in order to
get the whole program.

I can't answer you on Task Scheduler....I do not use it. I would prefer
that one of the MVP's answer that one. I do my own *tasks*......I don't
rely on them being done automatically.

hi Heather, I 'll try to give a better picture.
In Search forFiles & Folder when I typed Mozilla there appears
1 folder Mozilla File Folder.

Then when I enter Firefox (in search) 3 folders appear:
Firefox Setup 1.0 4,803 kb Appl.
Firefox Filefolder
Firefox 1.0 1kb Shortcut

The files I found in C: Windows were the following:
+ Mozilla ( subfolders)
Firefox>Profiles>adju8..default>Cache>Chrome>extensions>{972ce4 etc
does this help ? boni. Free 8.87 GB

OK.....let's make this one easy. You said earlier that you had uninstalled
Firefox using Add/Remove........

What happens if you click on a Firefox icon or use Start/Programs/Mozilla
Firefox?? If nothing happens, then download it again. If it opens, I don't
know what you were doing when you thought you uninstalled it....lol.

Add a line means exactly that, not add to the end of some other line. <g>
That is enter
MinSPs=8
as a new line all on its own in the section [386Enh]. No altering any
other line, no #s, no [s, no @s just MinSPs=8. If this still isn't clear
then read the Knowledge Base article to which I referred in my previous
message where you will see it explained how to edit system.ini using
notepad however use MinSPs=8 rather than the MinSPs=4 mentioned in the KB
article.

Mike: Although it might seem clear to you and I have gone over the KB as well
in explaining, just so I get my question across and understood, I went to
Search for Files .. searched system.ini and 1 file showed up System , then
I click it and System Notepad appeared. On the long list I found an entry
(386Enh) entry. Now, when I add not to another line, but the same line ? as
below ?

(386Enh)MinSPs=8

Or, if not , is it then typed in between the list ? as :

(386Enh)
MinSPs=8

I don't know... Watch Jane Run :(
So if it is add =additional or edit = change . ?
Which of the above is correct. or not.
thanks. boni.

The KB article is quite explicit as I thought were both of my previous
posts.

In the [386Enh] section, add or edit the following line as applicable:
"MinSPs=4" (without the quotation marks)

Nowhere in my posts or in the KB article does it say anything about adding
the text MinSPs=8 to an existing line. Any reference to "edit" is because
that is what you are doing, making a change, which could be either by
adding or inserting (does that help?) the line MinSPs=8 or amending or
editing an existing line such as for example MinSPs=6 and changing it to
read MinSPs=8.

Hi Heather, Well , If I go to Start/Programs , there is no Mozilla/Firefox.
also if I go to Add/Remove Mozilla/Firefox , is not there.
But, when I go to C: Windows and scroll down the following Folder/subfolders
are there: Mozilla>Firefox/Profiles/adjust.default/cache/chrome/ext/{972
etc#'s.
Again, does this mean that I need to remove the above? or not . I'm asking
you guys to give me the answer. If I wish to Reinstall.

thanks, boni.

OK.....obviously you uninstalled Firefox, but it left some files and folders
behind.

Personally?? I would just delete them via Windows Explorer (what you are
calling C: Windows, I imagine) and hold them in the Recycle Bin for 2 or 3
daysto make sure they are not needed (they aren't, but it is a good practice
to do it this way).

Then download Firefox again. This time, download it *unopened* to a folder
that is specifically for that purpose. I have one called *Downloads* where
I put all the programs.....and then open them from there.

The reason for that is if something disagrees with WinME, I have the last
one that worked properly in this folder, and I can revert to that.

When you get Firefox up and running, it asks you where to put the
downloads....I chose a separate folder, just so I know whether FF or IE
downloaded them.

Any other questions?

Cheers....Heather

Thanks, old salt!! I didn't think he had it all that long.....I am still
sorting out Profiles myself.

Hear you had a big storm this week.....I was talking to a Call Centre in
Moncton and the girl was stunned when I guessed she was from Shediac, lol.
It's that funny French you all speak down there!!

Cheers.....Upper Canada

Yes... snow, snow, and more snow! I don't mind snow though, it's those
-25's with hundred mile an hour winds I don't like, when it snows it's
nice and mild, you know the saying "too cold for snow...". That "chiac"
from Shediac is different to say the least. In the northern part of the
province we don't talk chiac, unless we drink too many of them funny
beers. Even we have a hard time understanding chiac, it's mostly a
south-east lingo.
