I purchased acer timeline laptop on 7/9/09 and i just received the windows 7 upgrade disc today and i really don't want to upgrade it, but I have a desktop that needs the upgrade and it has all the compatible hardware for win 7. Could i use the windows 7 upgrade disc key on the desktop?

If you can make an image backup of your present hard drive, or if you have another hard drive, then try it. But it is probably an OEM version and it probably won't work on anything accept an acer laptop.

Windows 7 Upgrade media is hardware independent. You can use it on the desktop (though you are technically not supposed to) to upgrade it, but remember that you can't use it on both systems. You're supposed to purchase another license to do that.

So long as both keys are upgrade keys, they should be interchangeable. However, if the key you got with the student discount copy is an OEM key and not an Upgrade key, it won't work. It all depends on what type of key each is considered to be.
