As a Dolphins fan I could never hurt Don. Although he's hurt me a few times... :?

It's the next 72 hours that we're worried about.

Well done! Get the first week over, and it gets a hell of a lot better. I quit 6 months ago, and the first few days was tough, the temptation to go to the shop and buy 20 Marlboro was immense. Ride that out, and it gets a hell of a lot easier. If you do crack and have one, don't just give up on giving up. Look on it as a moment of weakness, and get back on track.

The thing you'll notice the most, after about 2 weeks, is how strong tobacco smells on other people. Then you think "fcuk, I must have smelt like that". It's a good motive to keep on going with. Plus you'll save a truckload of cash. The money that I would have spent on cigarattes went into a savings fund. Paid for our airfaire to Las Vegas (£990). By the time we get there, I'll have most of the money for the hotel too. Another good motivator.

Thanks for the tips. We figured it out, $400 a month between the wife and I.
Y'up, instead of slowing killing ourselves we could be driving BMW's instead of
Honda's! It's like paying for 3 cars when you only have two.

I'm just sick of paying to feel like sh!t all the time. So far it's actually easier
than I thought, but it's early...

Reply to KingLoftusXII

It is mate, you're right. I'd tried before, but always under duress, and surprise surprise, I was back on the cigs within a week. This time, I was so convinced I'd do it, I only had one flaky moment, and that was within the first few days. I did it cold turkey too, no patches or gum, just the money to motivate me. The key though, is you've got to really really want to quit. If you and the wife are doing it together, then you've got someone to keep you going and vice versa.

As you say, why the fuck should you pay money to smell bad and feel bad every day? Good on you, and keep it up. :D

A word of advise....If you quit with a prescription {Wellbutrin} find out what stregnth...Wellbutrin XL had a very adverse affect on me {started thinking some weird chit and had general feelings of dispair} while the standard stregnth wellbutrin caused me no problem.

I'm currently a "Reformed Quitter" back up to 1 1/2 packs a day... thats still down from 3 full packs a day. I had been smoke free for 4 months the last time I tried to quit. Then I got a call @ work that my sister was rushed to the emergency room with congestive heart failure. On the way to the hospital I got stuck behind an accident for 15 min,you guessed it right in front of a 7-11. Well I ran in & grabbed a pack... the rest is history.

I'm gonna' have to try again soon... Good luck to you

Same thing here!!!! [raises hand]

I've been trying to cut down again, is about all....

I was just thinking, now that they're saving all the smoke money, just think of the money that they could save if they gave up the beer!!!!! [uncalled for] :P

Reply to RCPilot

Blasphemy! Blasphemy I tell you.

Put it this way RC, if you did that, yiu'd make Bill Gates look like a beggar in the street.

Reply to RobD

The Coors company would fold if RC stopped drinking beer.

I think the entire American economy would be in severe danger.

More likely, he's standing on one of the mountains of empty Coors cans in his garage, shouting, and that's just the echo coming back from the canyon in the middle.

Nearly 72 hours now. And I'm drinking. No desire to smoke either. This is it,
I can feel it. The wife's already smoking again too. Smokes are but just 20ft
away...Don't care.

I'm using the gum. Only about 2 pieces a day. I just chomp the sh!t out of it
before I get to a stop that I know everyone smokes so I'm not temped to bum
one, other than that, I'm cool.

Keep that shite going, mate. Piss that tobacco burning shite right off. Hotties dont dig the cigs, mate.

Seriously though, I'm sure your wife would appreciate the reprieve. Filthy habit.

Another hurdle cleared. If you don't have the craving after a few jars, then you ain't gonna get it. And it sounds to me that you've got the mentality right, you're determined not to crack. Great stuff mate!

There is no novelty to wear off. If Lofty is determined to quit, then he'll be fine. I've gone 6 months now, and I never experienced this novelty wearing off that you're talking about. Quitting is not a thing to be done lightly, he's approached this right, and I'll give him all the help and support I can.

Congratulations Rob! Thats a tough thing to do, my stepfather quit after smoking for 40yrs, he substituted peppermint candy for cigarettes, we thought we were going to have to buy him stock in the candy company but he prevailed.

Afterwards he got to the point he couldn't even stand to smell cigarettes anymore, not because he wanted to smoke, he said because they smelled disgusting to him, big 180 from his previous days.

Anyhow Congrats to you! Ryan

Thanks Ryan! I'd been a smoker for over 10 years, and after mucho nagging from wife, and various failed attempts, decided that I was off them once and for all. I did some maths, worked out how much I'd save by quitting and decided that the money saved would pay for a vacation. One wobbly moment aside, it went very well.

You do notice the smell once you've quit, it's quite amazing really. However, I'll never join the ranks of the smoking nazis who renounce everyone who smokes as evil and weak minded, while tut-tuting everytime they open a pack. I chose to smoke, and while it's still legal, I'll stand by their right to have a smoke. It's their choice. I have friends who still smoke, and they often say "does it bother you if I smoke" while I'm out with them, and it doesn't. It doesn't make me want one, it doesn't bother me full stop. If they want to carry on, that's fine. If they want to quit, I'll help them. Either way, it's an individual's choice, and I support that choice.

Its great that you've gotten away from smoking after 10yrs, personally I believe from my stepfathers family history the longer you smoke the greater chance you may have of developing lung cancer in your later years.

My stepfather developed lung cancer apprx 2yrs after he quit smoking the same thing happened with 2 of his brothers all 3 had smoked for at least 40yrs, all three are dead today from lung cancer.

Just one more reason to salute you from getting out of the smoking, besides saving money and all such as that you may have saved you life.

Watching someone die from cancer eating them alive inside is not a pretty thing to see, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, and as you say I also respect others right to smoke.

I just want them to realize everytime they light up they may as well be sucking on a gun barrel and playing Russian Roulette with their lives, but not everyone that smokes dies from lung cancer, unless you're in the unfortunate family history bracket.

Don't take me wrong please, I've watched them die, I would be irresponsible as hell not to pass on what I've seen happen with my own eyes, and to give another perspective on this subject.

You're right about the smelling thing. Even after only four days, I can definately
notice a difference in how things taste and smell. I was following a car today
and could tell they were smoking. Normally I can only do that if it's weed.

Sat. nights the biggest test yet. I've got quite the bonfire bash to go to and
most everyone smokes, and I know I'll be totally blized, with no wife or kiddies
with me. I may bring a big, fat, cigar as a cheater.
