I've been researching printers all night. Each time I find a printer I think I'm interested in, I find something that refutes its quality. Are the big printer companies just in the home inkjet biz to make money on the ink carts.?

I'm looking for a printer that will cost less that $150 AND won't suck the life out of the ink cartridge. I can't seem to find one. The Lexmark Z53 looks good-- many reports of it sucking down the ink (which is pretty expensive). The Canon S600 got a great review by CNET but they aren't making it anymore and the S630 is still rather expensive.

I would wait it out and buy the Canon but I just got a dig. camera and would like to print some photo quality shots soon. Any suggestions?

Why not go for the canon S500. Its quality its almost as good as the s630. The 630 is faster than the S500 but for printing photo's that is the most important thing. The canon S500 is within the same pricerange as the Z53.

I hate to repost like this, but it seems to apply to you too.

Rob.

"I have an Epson 780 which is pretty much the same as the new 820. Both of these are "photo printers". I would highly recommend them. I print a lot of 8x10 digital photos from my 3.3m Toshiba and find that it's nearly impossible to tell the difference from an 8x10 print. The new 820 is about $150 U.S. and the cartridges are $27 Black and $22 Color from Epson, so you know you can get them cheaper elsewhere. As far as the print head wearing out, all I can say is my last printer was an Epson 600 with the same type of print head and I had that for 5 years until I got the 780. Oh yeah, almost forgot, the reason I got the 780 was for the Ink. The Ink according to Epson won't fade for 25 years and it's acid free and so is the paper. :) Scrap booking wife concession! "

One more cool feature is that the inks are virtually waterproof. Met with an Epson rep one time and he printed a photo on plain paper and put it in a jar full of water. The photo never bled. Not that I have a use for this, but still cool.

Thanks for the info. I'm still pondering over the Epson printers and the Canon. I used to think Canon didn't make all that great of a printer... but the reviews say that they can print black text next laser quality now. Which most inkjets have a hard time doing.
