System Monitor

I've been watching the swap file usage and available
physical memory with this tool.

The swap file uses close to 70M with little running. The
available memory with little running is 4M but drops to as
low as 100K when simply viewing Yahoo mail.

Does is sound like more memory might speed things up a bit
or is there something else I should look at?

Thanks in advance!

How much memory do you have and how much is being recognized by the system?
Heirloom, old and 256 is working for me

I've gone through the process which you are now journeying. I have a
PIII, 700mhz as well. I went from 384meg to 512megs and couldn't tell
much difference. Swap file was still be used a lot. Went to 640megs
and no more swap file activity. Went to 768megs today - the most my
motherboard will recognize. Got 3 256meg chips off eBay as used chips
but good ones for $39 each plus shipping. Heck, my old 128meg chips
were 5 years old and working.

Yup, that's the show I was making reference to. The bikes are dreadfully

128 MB is quite anemic. Go for the 512 MB, or 768 MB if you can.

If several programs need RAM at the same time, the swap file ain't gonna help
you enough. Using the swap file slows down your machine, but don't discard its
availability.

KB
I can't help wondering if you have some form of spyware still present on
your machine - Bluelight may be perfectly legitimate, but it has to get its
money from somewhere.

I'd run HiJackThis, and post the log to one of the specialist forums (fora?)
that deal in such things...

You should also consider whether you need the calendar updates in Works to
load - this has caused problems for others in the past (go into Options in
Works and turn off the Reminders)

WRT your memory - RAM at 128MB is quite sufficient for normal purposes, and
shouldn't be overloaded at startup. I'd sort out your current problem first,
and then see what the SwapFile in Use parameter reads in the System Monitor
under normal running, then decide on any need for an upgrade.

Hi, Noel.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I tried turning off the calendar update as you suggested
but the only options available (through the toolbar) are
Audio-Play Sounds and History-Track History. No option to
turn off reminders. Maybe I can blast it with HJT.

Bluelight does get $9.99/month for their service. They
actually work through NetZero.

I really don't think there's spyware present.
AVG,ZoneAlarm,SpybotSD,Ad-
Aware,SpywareBlaster,SpywareGuard,CWShredder are always
running/run and updated daily. I even run online scans at
RAV and Trend every now and then. I suppose it wouldn't
hurt to post a log at HJT just to be sure.

Swapfileusage is currently at 53M, available memory at
360K. I have Microsoft Works, three internet explorer
windows and system monitor open. That's all.

Thanks again, Noel. I'll let the folks at HJT know you
sent me ;) .

Eurgh! <g>
your swapfile usage seems very high (assuming a clean boot when you measured
it!)
There's gotta be something running there that 'didn't oughta' !!
email me a copy of the HJT log, will you?

You thought 50M was high, it's now up to 72M.

I did not perform a clean boot. Looking for the link with
directions right now. Never did a clean boot in my life.

What's a good email address to send the log to?

Thanks, Noel.

Ok, I read the KB article and attempted a clean boot.

SPLAT! Blue screen with error message:
There is a problem with a system file
VxD dynamic link call:VSDATA95(01)+0002d1CC to "0028",
service 800A.

Now MSCONFIG settings have changed in the selective
startup list. Back to the drawing board.

Just reboot the PC, and run the System Monitor - that's good enough for the
moment.

Yep, running zone alarm.

Rebooted in safe mode, system restored to get back in the
game <g>. System monitor @32M right now.

I have a HJT log ready to send your way. Have you an
email address to send it to?

Thanks again, Noel
