Hi,
When I try to use Scandisk I get the error message "cannot open volume for
direct access" error message. I am using Windows XP Pro. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Plenty. In order for checkdisk to repair the volume, it must be unmounted. You
can't do that when Windows is running. So what you do is set it to check the
volume at the next reboot (before the disk is mounted).

I was walking down the street, minding my own business, when on Thu,

XP, Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 are all basically the same OS and use teh
NTFS file system. Unlike DOS systems like 9X/ME, the way they are
setup won't allow any direct access to the disk for security reasons.
All NT systems don't use Scandisk, they use Chkdsk, which runs at the
next boot up before all the drivers are loaded. So when you get that
message, just check the box for Chkdsk to run at the next reboot and
then reboot the system.

If you have Zone Alarm 5 installed it can cause this problem. Version 5.1
seems to get things back to normal.

Thanks Courtney. I do as you suggest and still have my problem. However,
yesterday afternoon, Scandisk started working. Go figure.
