After installing a second hard drive, the search function in the start menu
no longer works. It does not even open up to show file search options.
Perhaps a registry entry is corrupted or missing? How can I restore this
function without doing a system restore?

Have you been using Tweakui?

If you have Tweakui installed, please note:

1) Do not change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop tab
2) Do not uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do not hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do not uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do not uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab
6) To move "My Documents" folder, right-click on the Folder, and click
Properties.

Thank you, but I do not have TweakUI installed. Any other suggestions?

Sorry, on re-reading your post, I can see your's isn't
the usual Search problem.
I cannot offer any advice on why the Search User Interface
does not appear.

However, if you open Windows Explorer, do you have a 'Search' button
on the toolbar? If you click on this, can you use the Search function
from there?

The search button in Windows Explorer launches a Google Web Search side bar
for some reason. So I am still in need of of a file search function, but I
guess I can get 3rd party software to do that if I can't find a fix.

Have you tried a System Restore to a point prior to the problem?

Hey 'Loom,

I wonder if ahooa has the Google Deskbar installed. If so it would be in
Add/Remove Programs - and easily removed. I tried it on the expectation that
it would introduce an improvement in searching the computer, but every time
I activated it it immediately tried to go online. I was trying the program
itself, not Explorer's Search, so I don't know if the behaviour occurs as
described, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now.

I am trying to avoid a System Restore so that I don't have to lose all the
efort that went into installing the second hard drive. I do have the Google
toolbar installed for IE. I can remove it, since I usually use Firefox
anyway.

It appears someone advised against using TweakUI however;
I had to use TweakUI a long time ago to resolve the
disappearing search command problem.

That's because the problem had been caused by Tweakui in the first place.
Apart from Tweakui not being installed, therefore not the solution, this is
not the same problem anyway.

I did have the Google toolbar installed for IE. I uninstalled it but that

Deskbar, not Toolbar. There's no problem with Google Toolbar.

However, it's unlikely that while uninstalling the Google Toolbar you
wouldn't notice another entry called Google Deskbar.

OK. Personally I don't know of any reason the Windows Explorer Search would
launch a Google sidebar (actually I don't even know what that is, but
assuming it's genuine Google software, can't imagine that's it's been
installed surreptitiously).

If this happened immediately subsequent to your installing the 2nd hard
drive, I wonder how you installed it? Did you run software to aid, eg data
transfer, during this process? I just wonder if such software came with
setting Google as default for Windows Explorer Search, as some kind of
extra? Maybe it's installed as part of some other application? What make is
the new hard drive?

Otherwise all I can suggest is running Spybot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/, Lavasoft Adaware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and Definitive Solution's
BHODemon: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm. Install then
update them, then run.

By the way, you might care to know that System Restore will have been
flushed on the installation of a new hard drive. The only possibility there
will be if this problem didn't in fact occur *immediately* after the hd
installation, in which case the oldest restore point may work.

With regard to the Google sidebar.
If I open Windows Explorer (or any windows folder),
and click on the search button on the toolbar, this launches a 'Search for
files or folders' sidebar.
Below the Search options, there are four hyperlinks:
Files or Folders
Computers
People
Internet

If I click on the 'Internet' link, this changes the sidebar to the Google
sidebar that ahooa is probably seeing!

If I close the sidebar with the 'X', then click on the Search Button, it
defaults back to 'Search for Files or Folders' sidebar.

I cannot offer an explanation as to why ahooa's search seems to default to
this 'Google sidebar'.

I do have Google Toolbar installed in Internet Explorer,
(but I have not used IE since installing Firefox some 9 months ago).

I offer this info FWIW, maybe your WE, is the same but have not noticed it!

Cheers, George. Not sure if I've ever tried that before - you know, if I
want to search online I go online. So, the Explorer Bar - I wasn't being
very lateral, it appears!

So, it's immediately going to the *Search..........On the Internet* option
straight off. I'd still like to know how the new hd was installed. Meanwhile
BHODemon will show if Google remains - as it appears to.

What happens if you tap F3 from the desktop?
