Hi,

I'm trying to install an ISP on a friends Windows ME PC, but, to get an
outside line the PC needs to dial '9'. I've put in 9 in the relevant parts
of the telephony options, i.e. local and long distance calls, and put in the
correct STD code but it just wont put the 9 in front of the required number.
Has anyone else had this problem and/or know of a solution.

Cheers......

Try going to Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs / Windows Setup tab /
Communications, uncheck Dial Up Networking, reboot, then re-install Dial
Up Networking & reboot.
Hope this helps.
Regards Mike.

Mike,

Thanks for your feedback.
Unfortunately no effect. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

If the 9 won't "stick" when entered in the "When dialling from here" boxes
on the Dialling Properties tab and isn't being added automatically why not
include the 9 in the STD/area code for the users ISP number? For example
instead of entering 0808 xxxxxx make that 90808 xxxxx

Because the ISP CD dials a fixed hard coded phone number to perform part of
the setup with the ISP server before putting the phone number in DUN. Hence
the need to have it insterted automatically.

Out of curiosity why do you need to use an ISP's CD rather than create a
dial-up connectoid using the wizard? I ask because whilst not ideal it is
a solution to your problem. Personally I'd never dream of allowing an ISP
originated CD to configure my PC but do appreciate that your mileage may
and probably does vary here.

If you need a new account on an ISP and dont have any previous connection to
the internet then you need an ISP CD to set things up and make the initial
connect with the ISP server.

No, what you need is the telephone number, account name and password. The
rest of the configuration stuff is little more than fluff such as the ISP
branding your browser and supplying often unwanted additions to your
Favourites. The major exception here being AOL. In addition, of course,
the ISP's CD will often set up your mail account and possibly even news
server account in Outlook Express but the information required to do this
such as pop and smtp server names is virtually always available on the
ISPs web site.
