1.Can I have a 3rd HD run from my motherboard? (possibly a piggyback cable
to avoid being on same cable as dvd)
2. If I was to place it into an external usb case, could I run it
permanently along side my pc, or would I have to turn it off after long
periods?
3. Does it have to be just for back ups, or will it run programs fast enough
from it? ie, games or media.
4. Any recommends for a maxtor 160gig 3.5 inch drive, 8mb cache. I need cool
and quiet.

Best guess yes but not piggy back. You'll have to add it to the ide1
cable

Sounds like a good alternative to ide1 but will it be faster than ide1?
I think it would depend upon your usage, Ie, whether you're using the usb
case as a removable drive or the 3rd hd that stays active whenever the
system is on otherwise drive letters are thrown offf.

You mean USB external or ide1? Don't know.

Personally I'm biased against Maxtors because the older models were non-standard
jumpers and I had problems. That being said that 7.5Gb is still driving
my wife's PC as a replacement for the 20Gb Seagate that died.
