Won't Boot from HD

All,

Building a new PC w config as follows:

Gigabyte GA-K8NS
Athlon 64 2800+
512MB Ram
ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128MB
WD800JB
Lite-On LTC-48161H DVD/CDRW
Win XP Home

Powered it up for the first time tonight and saw LED's lite and
speaker beep. BIOS screen appeared. Set the date and configured it
to boot off of CD first, HD second, floppy disabled.

Rebooted with WinXP CD and loaded Windows. Rebooted and all went well
as long as Win CD in the drive. When I try to boot from the HD I get
a boot disk error.

I have tried resetting the boot priority to HD firs and CD second
without any change.

All thoughts welcome.

What message?

Could it be that winXP cannot find the MBR (master boot record)? Well
you could give this a try:

1. Boot from the WinXP CD
2. Wait while windows loads its stuff (only a minute), then go into
Recovery mode when the prompt appears.
3. Enter admin password (if applicable).
4. Is your OS recognised? If it is, you'll see a number (usually "1")
followed by the partition in which your OS is installed.
5. Type "FIXBOOT" (without inverted commas). Yes, when prompted that the
mbr will be over-written if you proceed.
6 Reboot into BIOS, and change boot order to HD first.

If winXP now loads you'll know that it was an MBR problem. If not, at
least you will have eliminated that possibility.

Good luck

PE,

Did as you suggested and system acknowledged it would lay down a new
boot record. Rebooted and got the following (and this BIOS boot
process takes "forever")

BIOS sees the HD as master on Channel 0 and the CD as master on
channel 1. No floppy.

Says, IDE Channel 0 Master Disk HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability disabled

PCI devices listing (shows list)

Verifying DMI Pool Data (takes long time)

Boot from CD:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

and there she sits.

Another poster suggested downloading WD utilities from the web and
trying that which I will do next. The HD came as an OEM purchase and
so included nothing.

When I did the initial OS install, the Windows CD recognized the
virgin HD and offered to format it. I took the default and pressed
ENTER.

Any thoughts?
