well apologies for not replying to earlier thread i made (if there was
anything to reply to i don't know).
well, new machine (posting from the old one). bought a new mobo, cpu, ram
and case. fitted it all together. transplanted recently bought (1 month or
two) hard disk.
transplanted recently bought (6 months) dvd re writer. bootup. crash
freeze. boot from cd, error 4 and error 7. cannot install nt kernel.
damn, faulty mobo? cpu? ram? psu? took back to shop. actually dad did. I
was at work. 3 days later well we replaced everything and it worked. so
started putting back old stuff. it worked. then didn't. reformatted hard
drive. still works. that will be £50 please.

hang on they got it going but its underclocked. bastards! look up on line.

"amd barton now running at 2.1ghz but still acheiving 3.0ghz due to 512kb
cache instead of 256. doh! Its supposed to be running at 2.07ghz. trying
to run my 2.8 at 2500 which is the sort of ratio my 2.2ghz laptop runs at.
(acutal clock speed 1800). So what i had really done was grossly over clock
it. No clock speed tables in asus mobo book unlike all i had before. no
instructions with cpu. not even a box, actually he just plopped it into the
mobo while i stood there. didn't go in first time he bent one of the pins.
so straightened it (sort of) with his finger and shoved it in again. ho
hum.

haven't connected it to the net yet been letting it burn in as is. want to
download service pack 1 and 2 on this machine but not online update but the
entire service pack and burn to cd and install on the other one. i want it
up to date then firewalled and antivirused before i connect it to broadband.
Any reputable servers got clean copies?

i also need service pack 1 (or at least i think this is the cause of the
problem) to install my usb drivers for my mobo. the cd ones say there is a
file missing half way through the install process. I hope it is inside the
service packs.

strangely though, alot of my usb ports are installed but i still have
uninstalled ones in device manager. Even more strange they aren't listed as
ports but in the
"? unknown devices" section. Want to iron out all these niggles and rule
out hardware failure before i flog my old machine or transfer the rest of
the useful bits out of it to the new one.
