Like an idiot, instead of exporting messages (dbx files) from OE, I found
the location and copied them to a disk. After a format and clean install, I
wanted to return them to the appropriate folder and have them appear just as
before. Well, guess what? They didn't. I had two inbox files, the new one
created by the install and the one I copied there. Same for all the rest.
Only the newly installed "boxes" appear in OE and they are empty by the way.
How do I get OE to recognize the old messages? Sorry to be a PIA but thanks
anyway.

Bart,
Probably the easiest way is to import the messages from your old or
archived store into your new OE message store. The following steps should
help you on your way.
a) Put all of your archived dbx files in a folder, lets call it Olddbx.
It is essential that the files are not read only (which is the default if
previously archived to a CD) so if they are read only you need to remove
this restriction either by using the ATTRIB command or by unchecking the
Read only box for each file on the General tab of its Properties. It is
also essential that Olddbx contains the file folders.dbx from your old
store; if not skip to c)
b) Open OE, then, using File | Import | Messages | Outlook Express 6 |
next check the box "Import mail from a OE6 store directory" and click OK,
now browse to the folder containing your archived message store (Olddbx),
now click Next, select "All folders", click Next again and you're there.
c) If you don't have your old folders.dbx file then things are a bit more
difficult and each of your old dbx files needs to be brought in
individually. Please post back if you need details of how to do this but
hopefully you saved the file folders.dbx and the method above will work.

This can also be done by right clicking on the folder containing the dbx
files, selecting Properties and unchecking the Read only check box on the
General tab. No need for any addition to the registry or to the right
click menu.

Mike
Can please explain it bit further
If a folder is a mixture of protected and unprotected files, will that way
it clears all
the read only flags?
I think it only the "Folder" itself not all the contents. It has to be one
by one files?
C:\xyz\ has got 50 file half/some of them
are with read only flags.
When I go to General tab(C:\xyz) the option is not marked. It is empty.

AAH,
Thanks for following up on this. Win Me doesn't quite behave in the way I
described which was how to do it in XP. My apologies. For Win Me, right
click on the folder, Properties, General and add a check mark to the Read
only box. Apply. Now uncheck the Read only box and when asked, check the
radio button to apply to this folder, sub-folders and files.
Whilst I liked the method you suggested, personally I try and keep the
contents of my menus to a minimum especially when, as in this case, there
is already an alternative.
Cheers,

Mike-
Once again you came through like a trooper for me and my problems! Your
procedure was spot on and everything was moved successfully. My problem was
that I was trying to import each dbx file separately and not the
"Oldfolder.dbx. All the files were not "read only" so that was good. Even
if they were, it would not have been a problem to uncheck each file.
I realized that my son and daughter-in-law had sent many email pictures
of our grand-daughter, Reagan Eve, and I was in a sweat to get them back.
Thanks from a grateful Poppa!
I have gone to XP, but I still like ME for the things it does. Time
will tell if XP will out do ME. Thanks to all who responded!

Thanks for the feedback Bart and I'm glad to read that you've got all your
e-mail back.
Best of luck with XP - hopefully you shouldn't have too many problems.
For myself I've been using XP as my main os since late 2000 although I do
still maintain one PC here that runs Win Me exclusively. Partly to help
when trying to help those posting in these NGs and partly because I'm too
lazy to change it since its never given few problems.
Cheers,
