Recommendation on ATI 9600

I wanted to hear recommendations on which video board people would
suggest. I am currently running an Asus 7100 Deluxe Combo (Geforce 2
MX) video board which has a tv tuner on the card. The motherboard is
an Asus A7M266 running a 1.4 GHz T-Bird cpu.

The local Comp-USA had a President's Day sale and offered an ATI All
In Wonder 9600 video card for $129 after a $30 mail-in rebate. It runs
about $137 after taxes. I saw Newegg had an ATI All In Wonder 9600 XT
for $189 and free S/H yesterday, but the sale was over when I looked
today. It's $215 + $4.99 S/H today.

I was going to ask if the 9600 XT was a large improvement over the
9600 fot the 50$ difference, but it's a larger difference now.

I am not a big gamer, but would like the option to play some. Is the
ATI 9600 a good deal better than the current Geforce2 MX I am running
now? The whole system isn't state of the art, so I am unsure what sort
of video upgrade is worthwhile.

Do you need the AIW? The regular cards without a TV tuner built-in are
a lot less. Try this one:

As for gaming, the 9600XT is decently fast and will last you a while.
The card I use (GF5200U) goes for about $60 right now and I play
anything current no problem.

Get a Saphire ATI 9600 from NewEgg. It will cost you around $90-100.
I have it and it runs doom3, halflife2 and farcry very well on amd 2800 with
512megs.
Yeah, the XT is faster, but the regular 9600 is good enough if you are not a
hardcore gamer.
Just stay away from the any SE edition.

Agreed, the 9600XT is a significant improvement over the base 9600. I
have a 9600XT based card in my windows box for gaming.

Comp-USA has the ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 for $129 after a rebate. It
seemed that $30 wasn't much to add that functionality and also save
using another PCI slot. I just wasn't sure if the 9600 was decent for
gaming or did it require a 9600 XT. My pc is an AMD 1.4 MHz, so it's
not exactly state of the art itself. Just wondering if a 9600 is a
large improvement over a Geforce 2 MX.

PMFJI,

You can check this site for a card by card breakdown of features:

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-02.html

Rather than going for a NEW 9600??, I would strongly suggest searching
the net and/or Ebay for a *used* or new, 9700 pro or 9800 pro. I'm
confident you can find one of these cards for the SAME cost as a 9600XT,
but each will provide MUCH greater preformance and more extensive
graphics, due to their 8 pipelines vs. the 9600's 4 pipelines.

Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions!
