Do I understand correctly that the Sempron processor (which is *not*, as
I've read, just a rebadged Athlon XP) is a 333-MHz-only CPU and will
therefore not work on older motherboards that only have a 266 MHz FSB?

The socket A Semprons actually are basically rebadged Athlon XP's. 333fsb
with 256k until you get to the socket A 3000+ which has 512k (basically the
Barton core). These will only work on 333fsb as you said. There are also
socket 754 Semprons which are basically 32-bit only Athlon 64's with varying
amounts of L2 cache. The 3100+ is 1.8Ghz 256k, the 3000+ is 1.8Ghz 128k, the
2800+ is 1.6Ghz 256k and the 2600+ is 1.6Ghz 128k. I know this is probably
more info than you were looking for, but FYI anyway. :) I have a Sempron
2800+ (S754) Emachines laptop that I got for $600. Excellent performance for
the money.
