I have a five year old LG Studioworks 995E that started acting up ( shutting
off by itself and going dark for a few minutes at
a time ) and now finally the upper half of the screen is gone. Wondering if
it's worth fixing or just throw it in the Recycle dumpster?

Discard the monitor. New ones are very cheap.

Parts and labor warranty are only 1 year. I would just replace it. You can get an hd monitor for under 150, or once I hit the local salvation army and picked up a crt for $20 and used it until I had more money. They guarantee everything you buy to work, so it has to or they'll take it back.
