i downloaded drivers. went and checked device mgr. i found under usb
controllers
usb mass storage device...with yellow exclamation point. what to do next ?
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsme.general (More info?)
Boot to Safe Mode
In Device Mgr, remove all yellow! devices. Also any in Other Devices (may
not be present - improperly installed or conflicting devices may be here)
Reboot to Normal Mode.
WinME should locate and re install necessary drivers for the removed
hardware.

I therefore assume that you don't have a copy of the WinMe installation CD.
Therefore, when it asks for the WinMe CD, you could instead, Browse
(navigate) to the C:Windows\Options\Instal or CABS folder, where there
*should* be a complete copy of your WinMe Setup files and the installation
of the USB files should then continue.
(The folder which you should be looking for [Instal or CABS] is the one
containing a whole series of .cab files - including BASE2.CAB which contains
the usbntmap.sys file.)

ok at this point it has gone beyond frustration.......
rebooted to device mgr. againnn
restart
new hardware found
usb mass storage device
clicked detail
file could not be found
source c/program files commonetc
destination c/win/system3 drivers/usbstor.sys base2.cab
clicked browse
file name
usbstor.sys.base2.cab folders
option ok does not accept
should i be typing
soooo...
as a result of the above. when i rebooted again and chose cancel instead , i
checked device mgr and there is the exclamation mark again. which means i
will require to reboot to safe mode , but it will then remain till i install
the driver

note. when i removed now the device and checked device mgr. the exclamation
point is gone along with Other
went into my computer folders
c RioDrivers ......... then i clicked sbdrvsetup.exe 384kb appl 8/24/04
message
Driver setup
the installation now requires drivers to be installed to allow communication
with your player
installation failed the file exists
Context CheckInstallRule
C/RIODRIVERS/RIOUNIV.INF,CRioDrivers/RIOUNIV.INF

With the USB device plugged in, when you see the yellow exclamation mark in
Device Manager, right-click on the lower yellow exclamation mark and select
its Properties and then the Drivers tab.
Select "Update Drivers" and then "Specify its Location (Advanced)" and
Browse (navigate) to the location of the BASE2.CAB file, mentioned in my
previous post.
